2 men charged with the murder of Springs police officer Captain Wynand du Toit
2 men charged with the murder of Springs police officer Captain Wynand du Toit! Nthuthuzelo Mana and Sipho Benjamin Ntuli have appeared in the Springs Magistrate’s Court, charged with the murder of Captain Wynand du Toit, a police officer attached to the Springs Police Station. The two also face charges of robbery with aggravating circumstances related to a supermarket robbery in Geduld, Springs, where the officer was killed.
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has revealed that Mana, one of the accused, was out on bail for another case at the time of the incident.
Details of the Incident
Captain Du Toit was off duty on Sunday, February 16, when he was approached by a woman who suspected a robbery was underway at a local supermarket. Upon rushing into the store to assist, he was met with gunfire from the robbers, who had ambushed the store’s owner and his two brothers, forcing them to lie on the floor.
Hawks spokesperson Warrant Officer Thatohatsi Mavimbela detailed the sequence of events, stating that during the shootout, Captain du Toit and one of the suspects sustained gunshot wounds. The suspects fled the scene, while Du Toit was rushed to Parkland Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Mana, who was also injured during the incident, was apprehended shortly after receiving treatment at a local medical facility. His co-accused, Ntuli, was arrested the following day in Mpumalanga.
Ongoing Legal Proceedings
NPA spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana confirmed that Mana remains in hospital and appeared in court in absentia. She disclosed that Mana had been out on R12,000 bail at the time of the incident for charges that included armed robbery, kidnapping, and possession of a firearm and ammunition.
The NPA had opposed Mana’s bail in the earlier case. That matter has been postponed to March 13, while the murder case has been scheduled for further proceedings on February 27.
