On an electrifying night where fashion collided with future and memory, Gert-Johan Coetzee unveiled his latest visionary collection The Arrival: Where Ancestry Meets the Unknown at South African Fashion Week 2025, marking a defining moment not just for the brand but for African fashion as a whole.

In front of a mesmerized audience, Gert-Johan Coetzee invited guests on a journey 10 000 years into the future and back home again. Seamlessly fusing ancestral symbolism with extraterrestrial silhouettes, The Arrival explored the profound truth that heritage is not left behind, it evolves with us.

From the moment guests entered the venue, the tone was set for something otherworldly. Each attendee received a pair of headphones, which played a curated immersive soundtrack during the show layered with celestial soundscapes, echoing sketches on paper, and atmospheric narration. This sonic journey allowed each guest to feel like they were inside the designer’s mind, isolated in focus, unified in experience.

A life-sized hologram of Gert-Johan Coetzee sketching, pausing, and discarding ideas offered a raw, intimate glimpse into the vulnerable process of creation. Surrounding the installation were twenty striking wooden spikes, each impaled with physical sketches representing discarded doubts and transformed visions. These hand-drawn and printed pieces weren’t just decoration they were testimony to the emotional labour of creativity.

The runway presentation that followed was cinematic in scale. A video narrative played before the show, illustrating an imagined exodus into space and the powerful return to Earth. Then, as the models took to the runway, they wore looks that embodied the collision of past and future structured metallics, ancestral beadwork, sculptural silhouettes, and flowing garments that shimmered like galaxies.

The Arrival is about reclaiming the parts of ourselves we feared were lost, said Coetzee. “Even when we feel like we’ve drifted too far, our roots remain within us.”

In a final transformation, the hologram returned after the show but now featuring full-bodied holographic projections of the models from the runway, adorned in the final looks and floating accessories as if being beamed up into another dimension.

The front row and leading lights gallery glittered with South African stardom. Among those in attendance were multi-award-winning songstress Lira, chart-topping rapper Nadia Nakai, media powerhouse Lerato Kganyago, iconic designer David Tlale, celebrated news anchors Abigail Visagie and Puleng Molebatsi, former Miss South Africa and Miss Universe finalist Natasha Joubert, and beloved entertainer Somizi, all paying homage to Coetzee’s continued innovation in African luxury fashion.

Attended by industry titans, global media, and devoted fans, the show received standing ovations and instant digital buzz. Fashion editors, stylists, and influencers praised the evening’s storytelling, soundscape, and technical creativity as one of the most ambitious presentations South African Fashion Week has seen.

This wasn’t just a fashion show, it was a declaration of identity, memory, and futuristic elegance. The Arrival cements Gert-Johan Coetzee not only as a designer but as a storyteller of African heritage for a new generation.
