“I cried; I got so emotional. That we made it—I never imagined raising Khanz alone, and I never imagined I would pull through for her. My little human made me so proud. I am still so teary,” she said.

Reflecting on her journey as a single mother, Khanyi expressed immense pride in her daughter’s intelligence and determination.

“She is intelligent. I knew she passed. My only wish was that it would be enough for her. She is a go-getter and a little hard on herself at times,” Khanyi shared.

Khanyi detailed her approach to supporting Khanz during the demanding matric year, emphasizing the importance of balance and understanding.

“She was stepping into war, and she had to come out as a victor. I told her Grade 12 is nothing but a revision of everything she knows. I also made the support she needed available—from tutors to extra classes.”

Despite the inevitable stress of exam time, Khanyi ensured her daughter felt both supported and independent.

“She was a little moody and sensitive during exam time (very understandable), so we gave her enough space but also stayed close as she needed us. I listened, encouraged, and learned her rhythm. I made her school life an element of our life. In that, I aided with tools and extra support she needed,” Khanyi explained.

Overcoming Challenges as a Single Mother

Khanyi’s pride extends beyond her daughter’s academic success, as she reflected on her own journey as a single parent.

“Being a single mom and having to be an all-rounder—from expensive school fees to giving my child a normal and balanced life—those are some of the challenges I’ve faced as a parent, but we made it,” she said.

Khanyi also expressed gratitude to those who supported her along the way.

“I would like to thank the staff from her school. My mother has been such a champ in the journey,” she added.

Celebrating the Milestone

To mark this significant achievement, Khanyi revealed that she has planned “a huge surprise” for her daughter. Khanz will embark on a 13-month journey traveling the world, an experience designed to broaden her horizons and help her discover her passions and interests.

“She is going to travel the world for 13 months, see and understand how big and diverse it is, and that should help guide her into her passion and interests in her career,” Khanyi explained.

This gap year represents more than a break from academics; it’s a celebration of hard work, resilience, and a commitment to personal growth.
