Anele Mdoda Allegedly Threatened with Rape by Uber Driver
Radio Presenter Shares Disturbing Experience
Renowned radio personality Anele Mdoda recently revealed a terrifying encounter involving an alleged Uber driver who reportedly threatened her with rape. The shocking incident was shared by Mdoda on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) in the early hours of Monday morning.
Mdoda’s Harrowing Account
Mdoda explained that she had booked an Uber ride and selected the “don’t talk to me” option, which appeared to upset the driver. She then alleged that the driver made a horrifying statement, saying:
“In my country, we would rape you to teach you a lesson.”
Mdoda further stated that she had to pretend to be on Instagram Live to ensure her safety during the ride.
‘I Was in Danger’
Upon arriving at her destination, Mdoda said the driver became aggressive, shouting at her outside her hotel. She recorded the incident as proof of her distress, noting that a nearby couple witnessed the altercation.
“So after he threatened me with rape to keep me in line, I started recording so that if anything happened to me, it would be on record. I faked being on Instagram Live. This was in Cape Town,” Mdoda stated.https://vm.tiktok.com/ZMkTQaJPS/
Uber Responds to the Allegations
The Citizen reached out to Uber for an official comment, and a response will be added once received. However, Uber South Africa did reply to Mdoda’s post on X, stating:
“We are sorry to hear about this. Kindly provide us with a phone number/email address linked to your account and the trip date and time via DM to assist further. Appreciate your understanding.”
Journalists Share Similar Experiences
Mdoda’s revelation sparked a response from other public figures, including journalist and presenter Heidi Giokos, who claimed that Uber drivers in Cape Town have a troubling reputation.
“I’m sorry you had to go through this, Anele. I’ve always said that Uber drivers in Cape [Town] are the worst. My stomach is always tied when I take an Uber. And here’s a clear example of what happens!” Giokos wrote.
Gender-Based Violence Remains a Critical Issue
Mdoda’s distressing experience comes amid ongoing concerns about gender-based violence (GBV) in South Africa. Recent crime statistics, released by Police Minister Senzo Mchunu on Friday, highlighted the severity of the issue.
The report covered the third quarter of 2024 (October to December), revealing that:
- 11,803 rape cases were recorded.
- 2,188 cases of sexual assault were reported.
- Rape cases increased in KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga, and the Free State, while other provinces saw a decline.
Mchunu emphasized that despite some reductions, GBV remains a serious problem requiring urgent intervention.
Calls for Action
Mdoda’s ordeal has reignited discussions around women’s safety and the responsibility of ride-hailing services in protecting passengers. Many are calling for stricter background checks and accountability measures for drivers.
As the investigation unfolds, South Africans await Uber’s official response and potential actions to ensure passenger safety.
