Mamelodi Sundowns could be about to add a surprise Bafana Bafana international to their squad this January transfer window.

Already Sundowns are set to sign one Bafana international in Jayden Adams from Stellenbosch FC this week.

Now according to FARPost, Adams might not be the only Bafana star signed by Sundowns this window. This is after they reported that striker Lebo Mothiba was spotted at the Masandwana training ground. They even go as far as saying he trained with some squad members at the club.

Mothiba training with Sundowns

“Bafana Bafana striker Lebo Mothiba has resurfaced at Mamelodi Sundowns after Moroccan giants Wydad Athletic Club snubbed him. FARPost can confirm the striker was seen at Chloorkop on Sunday morning ahead of a potential move. Mothiba trained with Masandawana players who didn’t make the trip to DRC for Saturday’s CAF Champions League clash against AS Maniema Union. The defending South African champions rallied from behind to beat the Congolese outfit 2-1. Sundowns and Mothiba’s management team are expected to engage in discussions on his personal terms in the coming days. He recently recovered from a knee injury and has been without a club since leaving French side Strasbourg early in 2024. He was linked with several clubs, including a potential return to Europe.” Wrote the publication

Prior to these news, this publication had reported that Mothiba was on trial at Wydad Casablanca. But in the end, it was said that he didn’t do enough to convince South African coach Rulani Mokwena to recommend him. There was also a report that claimed he could be on the radar of French Ligue 1 side Montpellier. That doesn’t seem like it will materialise, however, with Sundowns the most likely destination.

Deal imminent, but where does he fit in?

Although Mothiba has never hidden his admiration and desire to play for Sundowns, the link is still surprising. Masandawana already have Iqraam Rayners, Peter Shalulile, Arthur Sales and Lucas Ribeiro at their disposal.  It remains to be seen where the former FC Strasbourg player fits in under Miguel Cardoso.
