Black Coffee Foundation raises R3.1 million for music academy – Photos
The Black Coffee Foundation has successfully raised R3.1 million towards the establishment of the Black Coffee Music Academy, an initiative aimed at nurturing and empowering young musicians across South Africa.
The foundation hosted an exclusive black-tie gala dinner at LUXX Venue Sandhurst, Johannesburg, in celebration of Black Coffee’s birthday, bringing together a star-studded guest list and an exciting live auction that helped surpass fundraising expectations.
A Star-Studded Gala for a Cause
The event, which took place in March 2025, was attended by prominent figures in entertainment, politics, and business, including ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula, Major League DJz, Oskido, Anatii, Blxckie, Siyabonga Ngwekazi, former Miss South Africa Dr. Tamaryn Green, and media personality Somizi Mhlongo.
One of the biggest highlights of the evening was an exclusive live auction facilitated by Strauss & Co, featuring one-of-a-kind pieces. The auction exceeded the foundation’s fundraising goal, helping the academy take a significant step toward realization.
The Vision Behind the Black Coffee Music Academy
The Black Coffee Music Academy is designed to equip young musicians with the knowledge, skills, and experience needed to succeed on an international stage.
The academy’s curriculum will offer tertiary-level education, covering a broad spectrum of topics, including:
- Music production

- Performance techniques
- Branding and artist development
For Black Coffee, this project is more than just an educational institution—it is a legacy initiative meant to uplift young South African musicians and create opportunities in the industry.

Speaking about the academy and the success of the fundraising event, Black Coffee expressed deep gratitude and excitement:

Lungie Maphumulo, CEO of the Black Coffee Foundation, was equally thrilled by the overwhelming generosity displayed at the gala dinner.
“We are absolutely thrilled with the generosity shown tonight. Raising R3.1 million means we can take the first steps in physically building the foundation of the Black Coffee Music Academy.”
She also highlighted the deeply personal connection the foundation has with the project, stating that its goal is to enrich the lives of young musicians who dream of following in Black Coffee’s footsteps.
“This initiative is deeply personal to us because it allows the foundation to enrich the lives of young musicians who dream of becoming the next Black Coffee.
“We are committed to creating opportunities and shaping futures, and this is just the beginning. We are incredibly proud of the work the Black Coffee Foundation continues to do in communities across the country.”
The Journey Ahead for the Academy
While the R3.1 million raised is a crucial milestone, the journey toward launching the Black Coffee Music Academy is far from over.
The Black Coffee Foundation has confirmed that fundraising efforts will continue to ensure the academy is fully developed and equipped to provide the best possible education for young musicians.
The overwhelming success of the gala dinner has demonstrated the power of collaboration, passion, and purpose in making a tangible impact.
As the foundation moves forward with its plans, aspiring musicians across South Africa can look forward to an institution that will provide them with the tools they need to excel in the music industry—both locally and internationally.
For now, the excitement continues to build as the Black Coffee Music Academy moves closer to becoming a reality.
