Cape Town grade 9 learner fears for his life after knife threat
Cape Town grade 9 learner fears for his life after knife threat! A Grade 9 learner at a Cape Town high school is reportedly living in fear after an alleged knife threat over a classroom joke. The incident has raised concerns among family members, with the learner’s grandmother, Zulfah, speaking out about the escalating situation.
Joke Turns into Threat
According to Zulfah, the 14-year-old learner made a light-hearted comment during class, which offended a classmate. The offended learner allegedly contacted friends from Harold Cressy High School, instructing them to confront the teen after school.
Zulfah explained, “When school was dismissed, these boys approached my grandson and took out a knife. He ran back to class and hid. He only came home after 6pm.”

She added that this wasn’t the first time her grandson had been threatened. “Apparently, last year the same classmate threatened him with a knife, but he never told me until now.”
The Joke That Sparked the Conflict
The issue reportedly stemmed from a joke about a girl in their class who likes the alleged bully. “My grandson said, ‘It’s for me to know and for you to find out,’ and that made the classmate angry,” said Zulfah.
School and WCED Respond
Zulfah said she reported the incident to the school principal, who has promised to investigate.
Western Cape Education Department (WCED) spokesperson, Bronagh Hammond, confirmed the report. “The school was informed by the learner’s mother of the alleged incident,” she said.
She noted that the school had activities running until 7pm, and there was no formal report of a learner hiding on campus. “The school is making further enquiries into the allegations,” Hammond added.
