Cape Town has secured the top spot on the TimeOut Best Cities in the World List 2025 and Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis is beyond thrilled.

The year is already off to an amazing start for Mzansi with one of the nation’s most beloved cities and top tourist destinations enjoying a beaming endorsement from the survey that included the opinions of over 18 000 people worldwide.

Mayor knew city would snatch top spot

Amusingly, the mayor insisted that he knew the South African city would beat New York City for the top spot.

“Last year, we were number 2 behind New York City and I told you we’d be coming for New York. This year, we’ve made it to the top. Number 1 in the world, the best city in the world! Great for Cape Town and thank you to TimeOut” Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis

Hill-Lewis highlighted how the achievement would help draw more tourists to the city and ultimately create more jobs for locals.

High praise in every category

Cape Town scored high praise across the board with a high rating for food, beauty and quality of life. Interestingly, 97% of locals confirmed that the city makes them happy.

Duminy, CEO of Cape Town Tourism, celebrated the victory with gratitude to locals who all contribute to making it a special place to be.

“Cape Town is a city built on its people’s passion, resilience, and creativity. From bustling markets to serene beaches, every corner of our city tells a story of community and connection. This win celebrates who we are and what we stand for.” Enver Duminy
