Clover is looking for a Manager: Concept & Packaging Development to design of products which are complex and of a high profile. The incumbent is involved in market research, prior to conducting a business viability study and finalising the packaging design. Leads the packaging agenda and strategic direction on large scale Supply Chain projects.

Requirements

  • Degree ( In Food Science/ Technology related studies)
  • Direct experience in the Product Development/R&D field in preferably a Food manufacturing environment
  • Relevant experience in applying job related concepts, techniques and processes at the required level
  • People management experience

Duties and Responsibilities

Drive Innovation in collaboration with various Business Units

  • Stay abreast of local & international packaging launches & trends and communicate opportunities within the Business        
  • Establish frequent strategic innovation sessions with Marketing to share local and global innovations, ideas and trends
  • Build strong networks with key packaging suppliers with the objective to obtain information on innovation, new technology and application        
  • Ensure the development of packaging in line with the Marketing brief and company’s business plans, cost targets and delivering on defined consumer expectations        
  • Build strong cross-functional relationships with Marketing, Procurement, Production, NBD, Quality and other relevant internal functions     

Assist the product optimisation team, continuously applying new technologies to be more efficient in formulation cost

  • Build strong networks with key packaging suppliers with the objective to obtain information on innovation, new technology and application        
  • Establish a continuous review of all packaging elements with the objective to find opportunities for cost saving and/or improved efficiency        
  • Manage and drive optimisation and/or cost savings projects and ensure implementation according to timelines        

Design & Developing of packaging material

  • Put in place appropriate tools to manage the Packaging development process, i.e. Project Management Tools, Prioritisation tools, etc.        
  • Ensure all Ingredient- and Product Specifications & profiles, are up to date on the relevant Business systems relating to packaging        
  • Propose clear packaging recommendations in line with marketing briefs, considering technical feasibility, value analysis, risks, cost, accessibility, timing, food safety, etc.        
  • Provide the necessary drawings, dummies, works maps and all relevant specification requirements        
  • Be the technical packaging expert & support to all relevant departments (Marketing, Procurement, Production, Quality, Logistics)        
  • Coordinate and supervise packaging material trials and manage all the packaging aspects of projects         
  • Participate in shelf life predictive modelling, relevant shelf life testing and/or consumer tests         
  • Investigate & develop knowledge on new pack materials & ingredients, functionalities, technologies, printing processes, packaging equipment, innovation and saving opportunities        
  • Co-ordinate communications amongst suppliers, procurement, production and quality teams        
  • Mitigate risk for Clover by evaluating & auditing potential new and/or alternative suppliers        
  • Assist with supplier quality audits and incident investigations        

Responsible for Regulatory Affairs

  • Establish, manage and develop a well-experienced & skilled resource structure within the team        
  • Ensure easy, quick, up to date access to the most updated versions of all relevant Acts, regulations and standards
  • Build a strong network with the relevant Regulatory authorities, external associations and key stakeholders
  • Ensure the necessary support, input and feedback on regulatory matters to the  relevant PT&T resources as well as Business Units

Ensure compliance with the operational requirements of the factory

  • Create packaging item codes, load and maintain the BOM’s        
  • Draft, issue, maintain and control packaging material specifications, pallet configurations and colour standards
  • Ensure pack material designs & quality aspects comply with operational requirements and constraints of the factories        
  • As the packaging technical support, assist and support the process of fault finding (including corrective actions), in co-operation with Production, Procurement, Logistics, Quality and PIT teams, for existing packaging with continuous specification deviations        
  • Participate with Engineering and Production in setting up and commissioning of new packaging lines/equipment

Manage Staff

  • Ensure the needed resources and organisation to deliver on all product and development projects within the business within the required cost, quality & time framework        
  • Manage, train, coach and develop the team to ensure the needed medium and long term scientific capabilities & competencies        
  • Set individual and team objectives, manage and measure the individual and team performance        
  • Manage the Product Development budget        
  • Build a culture of efficient internal, cross functional communication        
  • Establish a Food Science Centre of Excellence in order tp provide product technology support to other functions within PT&T and the Business        
  • Manage the Sensory Evaluation function and ensure its efficient, relevant support to all functions

Duties and Responsibilities

Setup, maintain and operate laboratory equipment

  • Prepare and maintain stocks of chemical reagents and microbiological reagents/cultures/media
  • Operate laboratory equipment in line with the standard operating procedures and well maintained
  • Ensure that lab procedure are followed according to standard procedures
  • Maintain all safety procedures in the laboratory
  • Ensure that the lab is clean at all times
  • Ensure that Good Manufacturing Practices (GLP) is maintained

Conduct sampling and testing

  • Prepare and analyse samples
  • Releasing of Raw and Packaging materials
  • Perform routine QC/laboratory analysis
  • Report of Non-confirming and retesting and sending the final report is essential
  • Record all results neatly and must be filed as required
  • Ensure that all procedures are followed before releasing the final product to the market
  • Ensure that the laboratory equipment are calibrated and must be monitored at the beginning of each shift
  • Report equipment break downs in time

Safety in the laboratory

  • Follow all safety procedures in the lab. (e.g. wearing of PPE)
  • Know all emergency procedures e.g. eye wash station, safety reps and first aiders.
