Crime Stats: Only one farm murder reported in three months

The crime stats for the period between 1 October – 31 December 2024 have revealed that only one farm murder was reported. 

The Minister of Police Senzo Mchunu presented the crime stats for the third quarter of the 2024/2025 financial year on Friday, 21 February.  

ONLY ONE FARM MURDER REPORTED IN Q3 OF 2024/2025

As per the stats, only 12 farm murders were recorded out of a total of 6 953 reported murders in the period mentioned above. Of the twelve, one was a farmer, five were farm dwellers, four were employees, a security guard, and one individual who was not specified.

Earlier this month, US President Donald Trump cut aid funding to South Africa on assertions that the country was “confiscating” land via the Expropriation Act. Additionally, Trump offered to take in Afrikaners “who are under attack in South Africa” as refugees in the US.

DA PROPOSES COMMISSION OF INQUIRY

Following the murder of five people on different farms, where in one incident, a prominent businesswoman in Limpopo and a family member were set alight while they were still alive in 2023, the Democratic Alliance (DA) proposed an establishment of a Commission of Inquiry into farm murders. 

The party said it was gravely concerned about the rising number of farm murders in South Africa which further underscores the urgent need for effective action to address this issue. 

Then-DA shadow Minister of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development, Noko Masipa said they cannot stand idly by as the farming communities live in constant fear for their lives and face the devastation of losing loved ones.

“These farm murders threaten the country’s food security,” Masipa said.
