Radio Host Thanks Supporters Amidst Health Struggles

Well-known South African radio presenter and sports host Darren Scott is once again facing a battle with cancer. Scott, who has been living with melanoma—a severe form of skin cancer—for nearly 40 years, recently revealed that doctors have discovered new tumors.

Scott took to social media to share his journey, thanking South Africans for their well wishes and prayers. His current employer, HOT 102.7FM, also issued a statement updating fans on his health.

A Storied Career in Broadcasting

Darren Scott has been a household name in South African media for decades. He has worked at some of the country’s top radio stations, including Capital Radio, 5FM, 702, East Coast Radio, OFM, and Jacaranda FM.

In late 2024, HOT 102.7FM announced that Scott would be returning to host its afternoon drive show, The Just Plain Drive Show, marking his comeback to South African radio after spending 18 months in the United States.

Beyond radio, Scott also made his mark on television, most notably as the host of Boots & All, a rugby show on SuperSport.

The Long Fight Against Melanoma

Scott was first diagnosed with melanoma in 1986, which he attributed to spending long hours on the cricket field without proper sun protection. Since then, his body has been subjected to a relentless battle against the disease.

In a candid Facebook post, Scott described how he has endured multiple surgeries and treatments. While several early-stage melanomas were successfully removed, he faced five more severe cases that required more intensive medical intervention.

One particularly harsh treatment triggered an extreme reaction in his immune system. “It hit me like a series of Mike Tyson blows to my gastro-intestinal region,” he wrote, explaining that he lost 15kg in just two weeks. The aftermath left him battling dizziness, blackouts, and extreme fatigue.

Recent Health Setbacks and Surgery

Scott’s health challenges did not stop there. Just two months ago, his body “shut down,” leaving him incapacitated. Doctors determined that his gallbladder needed to be removed.

Now, after more than a year of severe health struggles, Scott says he finally feels human again—despite missing lymph glands, a portion of his lung, a section of his chin, and now his gallbladder. He has also had to adopt a new diet to manage his health.

“The good news is that I’m back at that place where all I’m fighting now is my weight,” he said, relieved that his biggest battle at the moment is maintaining his ideal weight rather than struggling to keep it up.

Support and Well-Wishes

Scott’s story has resonated with many South Africans, who have flooded social media with messages of support. He remains hopeful as he continues his fight, expressing gratitude for the encouragement he has received.

As he focuses on his health and recovery, fans and well-wishers continue to stand by him, offering their prayers and encouragement.
