Dawn Thandeka King embraces success of her crocheting brand ‘Izandla’
Dawn Thandeka King embraces success of her crocheting brand ‘Izandla’! Acclaimed South African actress Dawn Thandeka King is no stranger to the spotlight. Best known for her compelling performances in hit television shows such as Uzalo, DiepCity, Shaka iLembe, Isitha: The Enemy, and more recently, the Netflix series Go, the talented star has now found herself gaining attention for a very different reason — her successful side hustle in the world of crocheting.
Two years ago, Dawn began crocheting as a hobby, seeking peace and creative expression outside the often demanding entertainment industry. What started as a therapeutic pastime has since blossomed into a thriving business venture under her personal brand, Izandla — meaning “hands” in isiZulu.
From Hobby to High Demand
Speaking to TshisaLIVE, Dawn shared her gratitude for the unexpected success her brand has garnered. She revealed that Izandla has become more than just a creative outlet — it’s now a business with a growing fanbase, both locally and abroad.
“Things have worked out as even my peers in the industry want to have an item from Izandla,” she said. “And even abroad there’s a growing demand for the brand — that’s what I’m humble about, and I don’t see it slowing down.”

Her excitement was evident as she described how the crocheted items are now widely recognized, especially after DJ Sbu wore one of her pieces, catapulting Izandla into the spotlight.
“DJ Sbu wore my brand [and] there was huge demand, and I’ve been busy attending to inquiries since yesterday,” she said. “People are asking a lot about the brand, and it will help me as now things are quiet as far as acting is concerned. I’ve just completed shooting Shaka iLembe.”
Keeping Busy and Creative
While Dawn remains committed to her acting career, she emphasized the importance of staying productive during downtime in the industry. For her, crocheting is not just a business — it’s also a form of healing and personal growth.
“It’s a great feeling that I’m doing something productive in my spare time,” she said. “Izandla has become part of my journey not just as a creator but as a healer and a nurturer.”
Her passion for the craft has also led her to share the experience with fans and the public in a more intimate way.
Crochet and Heal: A Workshop for the Soul
Last year, Dawn invited her supporters to spend the day crocheting with her, combining creativity with emotional healing and community engagement. The event was met with enthusiastic participation, leading her to consider making it an annual tradition.
“People must join us for a beautiful afternoon of crochet and healing,” she said at the time. “Join me as an actress and founder of Izandla, as I lead a unique workshop designed to nourish your creative spirit and well-being.”
Whether attendees are seasoned crocheters or complete beginners, Dawn promises an event that is not only informative but deeply heartwarming.
“The experience is about more than just yarn and hooks,” she added. “It’s about connecting with others, opening up, and finding peace through creativity.”
A Bright Future for Izandla
As the demand for Izandla products grows, Dawn is optimistic about the brand’s future. With support from local celebrities, increasing international attention, and a community-driven approach to healing through art, Izandla is set to become a household name.
What makes the journey even more special is how authentic and rooted in love it is.
“This is something I love — and to see it loved by others, that’s the biggest blessing,” Dawn concluded.
For fans of Dawn Thandeka King, both on screen and off, it’s clear that her magic touch extends far beyond the stage and into every stitch of her vibrant, handcrafted creations.
