Death toll rises in N4 Easter weekend collision! The Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison has confirmed that the death toll from a head-on collision on the N4 highway has risen to six. The crash, which occurred between Belfast and Machadodorp on Thursday afternoon, involved a bakkie and a sports utility vehicle (SUV).

One More Victim Dies in Hospital

Department spokesperson Moeti Mmusi said the sixth victim died at a hospital in Belfast after succumbing to serious injuries sustained in the crash. The incident initially claimed the lives of five individuals, with three others seriously injured at the time of the accident.

Poor Weather Conditions a Factor

Emergency services responded swiftly to the scene of the collision, which took place amid wet and rainy weather conditions. Mmusi noted that poor visibility may have contributed to the crash.

“It is believed that the inclement weather may have caused this accident. Motorists can’t see well on the roads,” he said.

He urged drivers to exercise extreme caution, especially during periods of unfavorable weather.

Easter Weekend Traffic Risks

The accident comes as traffic volumes spike nationwide with South Africans traveling for the Easter weekend. Historically, this period is marked by high accident rates, given the surge of vehicles on national routes.

Motorists are reminded to adhere to road rules, avoid reckless driving, and remain patient during periods of congestion. High-risk routes include the N3 between Johannesburg and Durban, the N1 to Polokwane, and the N4 toward Mpumalanga, where the fatal crash occurred.

Authorities continue to monitor major highways and urge drivers to prioritize safety to prevent further tragedies.
