Delta Police Arrest Two Men Over Viral Marijuana Video
The Delta Police Command has arrested two men seen in a viral video smoking what appeared to be marijuana while sitting on a Police patrol van and making vulgar gestures toward law enforcement. The video, which quickly circulated on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), triggered widespread public outrage and prompted a rapid response from the Police authorities.
The suspects have been identified as 34-year-old Patrick Junior Asini and 20-year-old Tega Ojo. Both men were apprehended shortly after the video surfaced, with the arrest being confirmed by Police Public Relations Officer, Superintendent Bright Edafe, on his official X handle.
“The two suspects in the video, Patrick Junior Asini and Tega Ojo, have been arrested,” Edafe stated. “They are now in custody and under investigation.”
Delta Police Patrol Van Misused as Platform for Defiance
The now-infamous footage shows one of the suspects boldly perched on top of a marked Nigeria Police Force Anti-Crime Patrol van belonging to the Oghara Division. He appears to be smoking marijuana while another individual records and voices expletives aimed at the Police.
In the background of the video, a man can be heard saying:
“Tell them, f*** the cops, bro. Pass me some weed, man,”
before raising his middle finger in the direction of a nearby officer.
The footage, apparently recorded at a car wash, immediately ignited controversy online, drawing condemnation from users who criticized the blatant disrespect for the Police and the apparent normalization of drug use in public.
Upon arrest, the delta Police conducted a search and recovered multiple incriminating items from the suspects. The list of seized items includes:
- An army khaki uniform
- A green beret
- A face mask
- An axe and cutlass
- Six smartphones and four laptops
- Packs of weed (cannabis)
- Weed grinders (crushers) and Rizla rolling papers
- The Police noted that these items are often associated with drug use and possibly criminal activity. The presence of military-style clothing has also raised concerns about impersonation or potential links to organized crime.
SP Bright Edafe emphasized that the Command remains committed to upholding law and order and will not tolerate acts that undermine the authority or integrity of the Police Force.
“This is not just about a viral video,” Edafe explained. “It is about the broader issue of public respect for law enforcement, as well as the need to uphold the rule of law.”
This incident has reignited discussions around public perception of the Police, youth behavior, and the role of social media in influencing criminal trends. Edafe used the occasion to appeal to the public to exercise restraint and respect toward law enforcement officers.
“The delta Police are not enemies of the people. We are here to protect and serve. When people use our vehicles and uniforms as props for mockery or crime, it undermines public trust and threatens civil order,” he said.
He also cautioned individuals who believe that online popularity or social media virality offers immunity from prosecution.
“Those who misuse platforms like X for clout or criminal behavior should know that the delta Police are watching. We act swiftly and decisively, as we have in this case,” Edafe added.
The Delta State Police Command has confirmed that investigations into the incident are ongoing. The suspects are likely to face multiple charges, including public disturbance, possession of illegal substances, unlawful possession of weapons, and potential impersonation given the discovery of the military attire.
Legal experts say the charges could carry significant penalties under Nigerian law, particularly as the video presents clear visual evidence of the offenses.
Additionally, authorities are looking into how the suspects gained access to the Police patrol vehicle. Questions are being raised about whether the van was unattended, stolen, or provided by someone within the force—an issue the command is expected to clarify as investigations proceed.
The swift arrest of the suspects has been praised by both citizens and civic groups as a step in the right direction toward restoring public confidence in the delta Police. In an era where online platforms are increasingly used to showcase criminal behavior, the Delta State Police Command’s response sends a strong message that such actions will not go unchecked.
As Nigeria continues to tackle rising concerns around drug abuse, youth delinquency, and disrespect toward authorities, incidents like this highlight the need for consistent enforcement and civic education. The Police, for their part, are making it clear: disrespecting the badge comes with consequences.
