Departed Orlando Pirates star looking to ‘lift his family name’ at a new club
Former Orlando Pirates defender Sandile Mthethwa has now joined AmaZulu.
The 27-year-old versatile defender joined Usuthu this week after successful medicals. Hailing from Empangeni in northern KwaZulu-Natal, Mthethwa expressed his pride and determination to leave a legacy at Usuthu.
“I will do everything within my power to make my mark in the history of AmaZulu, lift my family name, and help the club return to the top four,” the former Orlando Pirates defender told AmaZulufc.net.
He further shared his gratitude to the club for their long-standing interest in bringing him on board.
“I’m thankful to AmaZulu for believing in me. I’ve heard there were previous attempts to sign me, and now that I’m here, I want to show my appreciation through hard work on the pitch,” he added.

“This club is close to my heart—it’s just two hours away from my hometown, Empangeni—so I feel at home already. I know the journey ahead won’t be easy, but I promise to give my all for this badge.”
Before joining Usuthu, Mthethwa had yet to make an appearance for Orlando Pirates this season. Even with the likes of Tapelo Xoki and Olisa Ndah injured, Mthethwa failed to break into the first team. Last season, he also made a handful of appearances for the Sea Robbers as they won two cup titles.
The former Orlando Pirates star was not alone, as Usuthu also unveiled former Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Bongani Zungu on Tuesday.
Will Mthethwa and Zungu make a difference?
