Eastern Cape Transport Dept urges motorists to exercise caution amid persistent rainfall

The Eastern Cape Transport Department is urging motorists to be extra cautious on the wet and slippery roads as heavy rainfall persists.

The department has warned that some rural communities might be completely closed off due to flooded roads caused by swelling wetlands and overflowing rivers.

Spokesperson for the Transport Department in the Eastern Cape, Unati Binqose, says the R12 between Maluti and Matatiele is among the roads that are already flooded.

“These conditions are less than ideal for us as we know that the volume of traffic is going to pick up by late afternoon [Wednesday], and the whole day tomorrow [Thursday], as people are rushing for Easter. MEC [Xolile] Nqatha has assured them that emergency personnel are strategically placed in hotspot areas for a swift response in cases of emergency.”
