South African-born billionaire Elon Musk has once again stirred controversy with his comments about South Africa, using his social media platform, X (formerly Twitter), to share strong opinions on the country’s political landscape.

Musk, who is 53 years old, is known for his outspoken nature on various global issues. Recently, he reacted strongly to a video of Julius Malema, leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), singing the struggle song “Kill the Boer” on Human Rights Day.

Musk’s Claims on White Genocide and Land Expropriation

Musk posted on X, claiming that the struggle song promotes genocide against white people and that land is being forcibly taken from white farmers.

“Very few people know that there is a major political party in South Africa that is actively promoting white genocide. The video below was just yesterday. A whole arena chanting about killing white people.”

His remarks quickly gained traction, with over 48 million views on the post, sparking a global debate.

In response, many South Africans pointed to a 2022 ruling by the Equality Court, which determined that “Kill the Boer” does not constitute hate speech.

Judge Edwin Molahlehi stated that the song was historically significant and represented political frustration over economic inequalities, rather than an incitement to violence.

“It does not constitute hate speech and deserves to be protected under the rubric of freedom of speech. It articulates the failure of the current government to address issues of economic empowerment and land division. The broad principle of freedom of expression is tolerance of different views,” said Molahlehi.

Despite this legal ruling, Musk’s comments have added fuel to existing tensions, with many accusing him of spreading disinformation about the country.

Musk’s Controversial Comments on the Expropriation Act

Musk also made claims regarding South Africa’s Expropriation Act, stating that the government had passed a law allowing for the confiscation of white-owned property without compensation.

“A month ago, the South African government passed a law legalizing taking property from white people at will with no payment. Where is the outrage? Why is there no coverage by the legacy media?”

However, this statement is misleading. The Expropriation Act, which has been a long-debated issue in South Africa, does provide for land expropriation without compensation, but only under specific circumstances, such as unused land or abandoned buildings. It does not allow the government to randomly take property from white farmers as Musk suggested.

Critics argue that Musk’s comments misrepresent the policy, which aims to address historical land injustices stemming from apartheid-era policies that displaced black South Africans from their land.

Starlink Controversy: “I’m Not Black”

In addition to his political claims, Musk also suggested that his satellite internet company, Starlink, is being blocked from operating in South Africa due to racial discrimination.

“Starlink can’t get a license to operate in South Africa simply because I’m not black. How is that right?”

This is the second time Musk has made this claim, and it has been debunked by Clayson Monyela, a senior official at South Africa’s Department of International Relations and Cooperation.

Monyela responded directly on X:

“Sir, that’s not true and you know it! It’s got nothing to do with your skin color. Starlink is welcome to operate in South Africa provided there’s compliance with local laws. This is a global international trade and investment principle.”

South Africa has strict regulations regarding foreign companies in the telecommunications sector, including mandatory compliance with local ownership laws. The country’s Independent Communications Authority (ICASA) has stated that all companies—including Starlink—must meet these legal requirements before receiving a license.

Musk’s allegations of racial bias in the licensing process have been widely criticized as misleading, with experts pointing out that many other global companies have had to meet similar regulatory requirements before operating in South Africa.

Reactions and the Global Impact of Musk’s Statements

Musk’s massive influence on social media means that his posts reach millions of people worldwide, shaping global perceptions of South Africa.

His recent remarks have been met with mixed reactions:

  • Supporters argue that Musk is highlighting real issues, particularly concerns over land reform and freedom of speech.

  • Critics accuse him of spreading misinformation, oversimplifying complex political matters, and fanning racial tensions.

Some South African political figures and analysts believe that Musk’s influence can be damaging, as foreign investors may misinterpret his statements and view the country as unstable or unsafe.

Conclusion: The Power of Influence

Musk’s recent comments on South Africa’s political and economic landscape have once again sparked controversy, with his claims on white genocide, land expropriation, and Starlink licensing facing significant pushback.

While he remains an influential figure in global discourse, many South Africans argue that his statements oversimplify complex issues and contribute to the spread of misinformation.

As the debate continues, one thing is clear: Elon Musk’s voice carries significant weight, and his statements—whether factual or misleading—have far-reaching consequences.
