Communications and Partnerships Intern
We are thrilled to announce an internship opportunity within our British Council South Africa team, specifically tailored for individuals seeking to kickstart their professional journey and make meaningful contributions towards our strategic objectives.

Role Purpose
As a Communications and Partnerships Intern, you will play an integral role in supporting the planning and delivery of various British Council initiatives. This position is designed for a highly motivated individual who has recently entered the workforce or is in the early stages of their professional journey. The internship will provide a rich learning experience, equipping you with essential work skills in a dynamic organizational environment.

Role Context
The British Council represents the UK’s international organization dedicated to cultural relations and educational opportunities. Our programs span across various domains, including arts and culture, education, and the English language, enabling us to create positive change and enhance lives in both the UK and the international communities we collaborate with.

The British Council places a particular emphasis on engaging with young individuals, aged between 18-35, who are beneficiaries of our initiatives. Through evidence-based research, technical expertise, and strategic partnerships, we aim to maximize employability, and provide sustainable, long-term outcomes for the youth and communities we serve. Our internship program is specifically tailored to offer talented newcomers a solid foundation for their careers while allowing them to contribute to our impactful work.

Priority will be given to individuals from formally disadvantaged backgrounds, marginalized communities, and/or those living with disabilities.

Main Accountabilities
As an intern, your responsibilities will encompass various accountabilities aimed at enhancing your knowledge, skills, and confidence while contributing meaningfully to our objectives:

Communications:

    • Contribute to social media strategies that reinforce the British Council’s online presence and enhance engagement with our audience.
    • Assist in improving digital communication methodologies within the Directorate, ensuring effective and coherent messaging.
    • Learn to track and analyze content performance across diverse channels to optimize our communication strategies.
    • Create visually appealing multimedia assets, including high-level video content and digital materials for both internal and external use.
    • Collaborate with experienced colleagues in the communications team to conceptualize and produce engaging multimedia materials for campaigns and events.
    • Under the guidance of the Country Director and Marketing and Communication team, assist in developing a two-pronged country-level communications plan, boosting the digital profile of our leadership team.

    Partnership Development:

      • Collaborate with the Business Development Manager and program teams to conduct research for stakeholder mapping and potential partnership exploration.
      • Develop comprehensive stakeholder databases to assist in effective outreach and collaboration efforts.
      • Present research findings and progress updates to the Country Leadership Team alongside the Business Development Manager.
      • Participate in identifying and nurturing productive partnerships with internal stakeholders, like the British High Commission, to creatively engage communities and showcase the critical work of the British Council.

      Programme Support:

        • Provide administrative support for monitoring and evaluating our programs, contributing to their effectiveness.
        • Assist in organizing and promoting internal and external events and activities through collaboration with various teams and stakeholders.
        • Gain insights into leadership, planning, and communication skills essential for successful multi-tasking and prioritization in a fast-paced environment.

        Minimum Requirements

        • A recent graduate specializing in Marketing, Communications, Social Sciences, or a related field.
        • An equivalent qualification in the form of a Certificate, Diploma, or Degree.

        Role Specific Knowledge and Experience

        • Strong report writing, research, and analytical skills.
        • Familiarity with marcoms principles and the ability to conduct presentations.
        • A keen interest in education, youth empowerment, and/or the creative economy and arts.
        • Good written and verbal communication abilities.
        • Basic computer literacy, including familiarity with social media platforms and applications like Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Teams.
        • A strong commitment to learning and professional growth.

        Desirable:

        • Active participation on social media platforms showcasing your skills and understanding.

        Additional Information

        • Contract Duration: 12 months
        • Remuneration: R9,411 per month
        • Location: Johannesburg, South Africa
        • Candidates must have existing rights to live and work in South Africa.
        • Language Requirements: Proficiency in written and verbal English is essential.
