Minimum Requirements

To be considered for the SHER Intern position, candidates must meet the following requirements:

  • Educational Background: A Matric/Grade 12 certificate is necessary. Furthermore, candidates should possess a Diploma in Health & Safety or Environmental Science or should be in the process of acquiring one.
  • Professional Certification: A SAMTRAC (Safety Management Training Course) certificate is advantageous and will strengthen your application.

Duties & Responsibilities

As a SHER Intern at RCL Foods, you will play a key role in the enhancement and monitoring of safety standards across our operations. The successful candidate will be tasked with a variety of responsibilities, ensuring that all safety protocols are observed. Below are some of your key duties:

Technical Support: You will provide crucial technical support in improving, maintaining, and monitoring existing management systems alongside standard operating procedures. Your contributions will directly influence the efficacy of our safety programs.
Adherence to HSE Processes: In this role, you will ensure that all company Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) processes and procedures are strictly followed. Your attention to detail will be fundamental in sustaining our organization’s commitment to safety.
Compliance Inspections and Audits: Conduct routine safety compliance inspections and audits against relevant authorizations, guidelines, and legislation. You will create comprehensive action plans to address areas where non-compliance is identified, enhancing our overall safety performance.
Proactive Inspections: You will conduct both planned and unplanned safety inspections and compile detailed reports that capture observations and necessary improvements.
Fire Safety: Ensuring that fire extinguishers and first aid kits are compliant—properly serviced and accessible—is a critical responsibility that you will oversee.
Risk Assessments: You will review and conduct risk assessments, identifying potential hazards and mitigating risks to create a safer environment for all staff.
Information Compilation: Actively compile data for weekly, monthly, and periodic reports to provide insights into safety performance metrics.

    Emergency Response Drills: Schedule and conduct emergency response drills to ensure preparedness among the team for potential safety incidents.
    Incident Investigations: Play an active role in compiling information and participating in incident investigations to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
    Communication: Ensure that noticeboards within the facility display essential HSE information clearly and accessibly to all staff members.
    Meeting Participation: Attend HSE statutory meetings, take minutes, and ensure actionable items are followed through to foster robust safety protocols.
    CAPA System: Assist in implementing the Corrective Actions and Preventative Actions (CAPA) system to enhance our safety culture.
    Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Oversee the ordering and distribution of PPE to ensure all employees are equipped for their roles safely.

      Inductions and Training: Conduct daily inductions for new employees and participate in the organization’s training initiatives.
      Record Keeping: Maintain comprehensive training records within the SHEQ-X system and conduct quarterly audits of contractor files to ensure compliance with safety standards.
      Cultural Engagement: Engage with team members on the floor to identify initiatives aimed at improving the health and safety culture.
      Toolbox Talks: Share and track departmental toolbox talks, reinforcing safety protocols and promoting a culture of continuous learning.
