Flying Squad nabs 2 suspects in Khayelitsha robbery attempt
In a swift response to a crime tip-off, the South African Police Service (SAPS) Flying Squad arrested two suspects in Khayelitsha, Cape Town, for their alleged involvement in an attempted robbery and possession of an unlicensed firearm.
The incident unfolded on Mew Way bridge, a known commuter route in the township, where the suspects reportedly attempted to rob members of the public. Thanks to a community tip-off and prompt police action, the suspects were quickly located and apprehended before the situation could escalate further.
Community Tip-Off Leads to Action
According to SAPS spokesperson Malcolm Pojie, officers were alerted to suspicious activity in the area after concerned community members reported that two men were threatening passersby and attempting to rob them near the bridge.
“Members were tipped off about two suspects attempting to rob people on the Mew Way bridge,” said Pojie.
Flying Squad
Police immediately responded by dispatching Flying Squad officers to the scene, who then began tracking the suspects’ movements.
Chase Ends in Arrest on the N2 Highway
Following the report, the suspects were spotted near the N2 highway, one of Cape Town’s busiest transport corridors. When police officers approached, the suspects attempted to flee on foot, leading to a brief but intense chase.
“Upon noticing the members approaching, the suspects ran but were apprehended and searched,” Pojie explained.
A search of the suspects led to the recovery of a pistol with two rounds of ammunition, which was found in the possession of one of the men. Police believe the weapon may have been intended for use in the attempted robbery or other criminal activities in the area.
Suspects Detained at Khayelitsha SAPS
The two suspects, aged 36 and 43, were taken into custody and detained at the Khayelitsha SAPS station, where they are currently being held pending formal charges. They are expected to be charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, and potentially attempted robbery, depending on the outcome of ongoing investigations.
The men will appear in the Khayelitsha Magistrates Court once the formal charging process is completed.
Gun Violence and Crime in Khayelitsha
Khayelitsha, one of the largest townships in South Africa, continues to grapple with high levels of violent crime, including gang-related violence, robberies, and illegal firearm possession. The area has long been a focus for police interventions and crime prevention strategies, yet incidents like these still occur frequently, highlighting the persistent safety challenges residents face.
The discovery of yet another unlicensed firearm reinforces concerns about the proliferation of illegal weapons in Cape Town’s townships. Authorities say these firearms often end up in the hands of criminals who use them to terrorize communities.
Community Collaboration Proves Vital
Police have praised the members of the public who alerted them to the robbery attempt, emphasizing the importance of community cooperation in combating crime.
“This arrest was made possible thanks to vigilant community members who reported the suspects’ suspicious behavior,” said Pojie. “We urge more citizens to come forward with information that can help us prevent crime and bring criminals to justice.”
He added that SAPS would continue to increase visibility and deploy tactical teams in high-crime zones like Khayelitsha as part of ongoing efforts to improve public safety.
Ongoing Investigations
Police investigations are still underway, and authorities are working to determine whether the suspects are linked to any other criminal activities in the area. Forensic testing will be conducted on the recovered firearm to establish if it was used in previous crimes.
In the meantime, law enforcement has reassured the public that they are committed to maintaining law and order and removing dangerous individuals and weapons from the streets.
