Former Mamelodi Sundowns star Peter Ndlovu remembered on his birthday

Zimbabwean football legend Peter Ndlovu, a former Mamelodi Sundowns star and national team captain, is celebrating his birthday today.

Nicknamed “The Flying Elephant” due to his incredible pace and his surname Ndlovu, which means “elephant” in Ndebele, he was also fondly called “Nsukuzonke”, meaning “every day”, because he consistently created goal-scoring opportunities whenever he was on the pitch. Widely regarded as one of Africa’s greatest footballers, Ndlovu’s impact on the game continues to inspire generations across the continent.

Peter Ndlovu: A Trailblazer in African Football

Born on February 25, 1973, Ndlovu rose to prominence as one of Zimbabwe’s finest football exports. Today Ndlovu turns 51. He began his career with Highlanders Football Club, one of Zimbabwe’s most prestigious clubs, before making his move to Europe.

He made history by becoming the first African player to feature in the English Premier League when he joined Coventry City in the early 1990s. His blistering pace, dribbling skills, and goal-scoring ability made him a household name both in England and across Africa.

After his successful stint in Europe, Ndlovu returned to South Africa, where he played for Mamelodi Sundowns, cementing his legacy as one of the club’s greatest players. His leadership on and off the field earned him admiration from fans and fellow players alike.

Ndlovu’s contributions to football extend beyond his playing days. He has served as team manager for Mamelodi Sundowns, playing a key role in the club’s continued dominance in South African football.
