From cycling to Carnival: Fun festivals in Cape Town this March
If you’re looking for a festival in Cape Town, you’re spoiled for choice this month. From the iconic Cycle Tour to a youth literary gathering, there’s so much happening to tempt locals and visitors alike.
When Cape Town was voted TimeOut’s Best City in the World, 97% of locals said their city made them happy. Voters praised the culture, nightlife, and natural beauty of the Mother City. And what better way to soak up this atmosphere than through one of these festivals?
1. Cape Town Pride (1 March)
Like other great cities, Cape Town hosts an annual Pride event, celebrating the local LGBT+ community and raising awareness of related issues. Although events started in February, the showstopper of this Cape Town festival is undoubtedly the Mardi Gras & Parade, taking place in Green Point. Festival-goers can look forward to colourful costumes and a music line-up that includes Jimmy Nevis, DJ Namba and Lynelle Kenned.
2. Cape Town Cycle Tour and Expo (9 March)
The 47th edition of the world-famous Cape Town Cycle Tour takes place again this month. Approximately 30 000 cyclists will gather in the Mother City for what is now the world’s largest timed cycling event. The route starts at the Grand Parade, follows the Cape Peninsula and finishes in Green Point. For enthusiasts of all levels, there’s also the Cape Town Cycle Tour Expo running from 6-8 March. The event showcases the best of cycling equipment and nutrition technology.
3. Cape Town Carnival (15 March)
If you’re looking for festivals in Cape Town, you can’t miss the Cape Town Carnival. The colourful event celebrates 15 years this March, with the theme WowZA! This Cape Town festival will see hundreds of performers take to the streets of Green Point. Musicians include YoungstaCPT, Paxton and Bravo le Roux. Joining the parade will be Erika Januza from the famous Rio Carnival in Brazil, as well as the DHL Stormers.
4. Open Book Youth Fest (18-26 March)
The Open Book Youth Fest is a literary event for young people. It is one of the newer festivals in Cape Town, having started in 2023. The star-studded programme includes authors Mia Arderne, Siphokazi Jonas and Alex Latimer. There are storytelling and colouring sessions, while older youth can enjoy workshops on poetry and writing children’s books. Events take place across the city, including at Central Library and Langa Library.
