The Team and Focus Areas

The Foundation’s health initiatives focus on addressing major infectious diseases that disproportionately impact developing countries but often receive limited funding. The team supports the implementation and delivery of proven tools and interventions, and invests in research and development for innovative solutions such as vaccines, diagnostics, and therapeutics.

Specifically, the Enterics, Diagnostics, Genomics, & Epidemiology (EDGE) Team aims to significantly reduce childhood deaths caused by diarrheal diseases in low- and lower-middle-income countries and to eliminate typhoid as a public health concern worldwide. Their work includes developing low-cost diagnostics, enhancing pathogen surveillance, and advancing vaccine development targeting rotavirus, bacterial causes of diarrhea, and enteric fever. The team also pioneers efforts in genomic surveillance from clinical samples and wastewater to improve outbreak detection and public health responses.

The Role of the Senior Program Officer

The upcoming Senior Program Officer (SPO) will play a crucial role in shaping and leading strategic investments within the Enterics Program. The ideal candidate will be a self-starter, capable of synthesizing diverse perspectives, building consensus, and driving complex projects forward. They will oversee a portfolio of grants and partnerships, with a particular focus on innovative solutions aimed at modifying gut health to enhance vaccine effectiveness.

This role involves providing leadership in product development, program management, and strategic communications. The SPO will collaborate closely with the Deputy Director of Enteric & Diarrheal Diseases to refine and implement the program’s strategic vision, ensuring alignment with the Foundation’s overarching goals.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the development and management of a portfolio of grants and contracts, including reviewing proposals and providing strategic recommendations.
  • Collaborate with leadership to implement the program’s strategy, fostering innovative approaches to gut health interventions.
  • Cultivate new partnerships with global experts in immunology, gut physiology, and related fields to advance research and development.
  • Manage data and reporting activities, documenting key activities, tracking progress, and preparing communications for foundation leadership.
  • Support grantees and partners through scientific and strategic guidance, including study design and clinical trial planning.
  • Facilitate cross-cutting initiatives, stakeholder engagement, and external representation of the Foundation’s work in the field.

Qualifications and Experience

Candidates should possess a PhD and/or MD with at least 15 years of experience in multidisciplinary research related to infectious diseases, immunology, or gut physiology. Experience working in or with low- and middle-income countries, managing complex programs, and fostering collaborations is essential. Strong skills in scientific writing, data analysis, stakeholder management, and strategic decision-making are required. The ability to navigate ambiguity, work efficiently in a fast-paced environment, and communicate effectively across diverse audiences will be key to success.

Additional Details

This position involves up to 30% travel domestically and internationally. The salary range for this role is between $233,600 and $362,200 USD, with adjustments based on location and experience.
