Gauteng traffic police urge caution as wet weather increases road dangers

Gauteng traffic police are urging all motorists to drive with extreme caution as persistent wet weather continues to wreak havoc on the province’s roads. With consistent rainfall over the past few days, road conditions have significantly deteriorated, leading to dangerous driving conditions, reduced visibility, and a spike in road accidents.

Officials are warning that highways and suburban routes alike have become slippery due to water accumulation, with some areas experiencing flooding and obstructed roadways. This has increased the likelihood of collisions, particularly in areas where drivers have not adjusted their behavior to suit the weather.

According to Gauteng Traffic Police Spokesperson Obed Sibasa, several major accidents have already been reported across the province, many of which have been attributed to reckless driving, such as speeding on wet surfaces and failing to maintain safe following distances.

“We’ve seen an increase in incidents,” Sibasa said. “An earlier bumper bash on the N1 near Malibongwe, a vehicle on its roof in Menlyn on Garsfontein Road, another accident on Impala Road, and a serious crash on the N3 near Modderfontein are just a few of the recent examples. These incidents are largely the result of persistent rain and drivers not adjusting to the conditions.”

Sibasa also highlighted the added vulnerability of pedestrians during this time. With many footpaths and sidewalks waterlogged or blocked, pedestrians are being forced to cross busy roads, often in unsafe places. Drivers are being urged to be especially vigilant in urban areas, near schools, and in residential neighborhoods.

“Rain doesn’t only affect drivers. Pedestrians are equally affected and may take risks trying to cross the road where it’s not safe, just to avoid puddles or floods. Motorists need to be extra cautious,” Sibasa added.

The traffic department is advising motorists to:

  • Reduce speed and maintain a safe following distance, particularly on highways and busy routes.

  • Ensure headlights are on during overcast or rainy conditions to improve visibility for themselves and other drivers.

  • Avoid sudden braking or sharp turns, which could result in skidding on wet surfaces.

  • Be mindful of large puddles or flooding, which could hide potholes or damage vehicles.

  • Check windscreen wipers and tyre tread, both of which are essential for maintaining visibility and grip in wet weather.

  • Avoid unnecessary travel, especially during peak rainfall or if storm warnings have been issued.

Motorists are also encouraged to stay updated on road conditions through radio stations, news platforms, or traffic apps, especially before embarking on longer journeys.

In addition to advising drivers, the Gauteng traffic police will also be increasing patrols and visibility on major routes to monitor compliance and assist with any weather-related incidents. Emergency response teams are on standby to handle breakdowns, collisions, and stranded motorists.

Local authorities have emphasized that the wet conditions are expected to continue in the coming days, making vigilance on the roads even more critical. The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has also issued weather alerts, warning of continued thunderstorms, heavy rain, and potential localized flooding across parts of Gauteng, including Johannesburg, Tshwane, and Ekurhuleni.

Sibasa concluded with a final plea: “Your life and the lives of others are not worth the few minutes you might save by rushing. Rather arrive late than not at all. Drive with patience, and please, adjust your driving to the conditions.”

As the rainy season continues, Gauteng drivers are reminded that safety begins with each individual behind the wheel.
