African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) leader Collen Malatji has told South African Communist Party (SACP) secretary-general Solly Mapaila to join Jacob Zuma’s uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party.

Malatji’s sentiment comes as the SACP has criticised the ANC for forming the Government of National Unity (GNU) with parties like the Democratic Alliance (DA) and Freedom Front Plus, instead of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party.

MALATJI TELLS SACP’S MAPAILA TO JOIN MK PARTY

The SACP is part of the tripartite alliance with the African National Congress (ANC) and Congress of the Trade Unions (Cosatu) and has consistently campaigned for the former ruling party for national and local elections. However, in December 2024, the organisation confirmed that it would contest the 2026 local government elections independently.

Speaking during the Peter Mokaba memorial lecture in Khayelitsha, Cape Town, on Friday, 10 January, Malatji said Mapaila and his friends shouldn’t think that they can disposition the ANC. Instead, they should join Zuma’s MK Party.

Malatji accused Mapaila of being a populist and insisted that the SACP belongs to the mass democratic movement.

“When we were at 63%, they were happy with us; when we were at 57%, they were happy with us. When we are under siege, they leave us and join counter-revolution at the expense of our people. Solly will not go with any SACP; he found it here. If he wants to join the MK Party with Floyd Shivambu, he should leave the SACP.

“People in the movement tend to believe that because we clap for them when they enter meetings and we sing for them, they think this organisation belongs to them. No SACP belongs to Solly,” he said as the crowd cheered.
