Robert Marawa seems to know more than he is letting on regarding the ongoing Monnapule Saleng/Orlando Pirates standoff.

Marawa says Saleng’s absence isn’t down to injury

Renowned broadcaster and journalist Robert Marawa is keeping his cards close to his chest regarding the Saleng/Pirates standoff. However, all is not well between the two parties.

“Chap is unhappy with treatment and contractual undertakings that are not met. There’s been a serious push-back and no end in sight. It’s an ongoing story with many levels and very personal issues that need to be addressed.” – Marawa said on X.

He also hinted at more layers to the situation involving legal issues and more intel on the situation as it unfolds:

There are many layers, a lot of it legal with adverse implications. Destroying the player is not part of the mission….trust me, u will know soon.

R40 million down the drain for the Orlando Pirates board?

Not long ago, Pirates had the opportunity to sell Monnapule Saleng to European suitors. Figures in the region of €2 million (just a shade under R40 million) were mentioned. However, the Buccaneers board decided to keep their star winger. Now that decision appears to be a foolish one. The mercurial star hasn’t made a single competitive appearance in 2025. His last outing for the Sea Robbers was a goalless draw against Al Ahly in December in a Caf Champions League group stage match. Ever since his scintillating 2022-2023 campaign when he scored 15 goals and supplied 11 assists in 30 matches across all competitions, he’s looked a shadow of himself. They might end up losing the player for absolutely nothing if this standoff persists.

Where is Mbatha?

Gifted central midfielder Thalente Mbatha issued his own update on Instagram addressing rumours he had arrived at training intoxicated. The club faces a midfield crisis before their clash with Cape Town City.

“They said I’m not training, you listen to everything, and I just came back from training. People can say whatever about me, but I’m coming from training.”

Will Saleng play again for Pirates or is it best to sell the winger asap?
