Greta Gerwig’s ‘Narnia’ to debut in Imax before Netflix
Greta Gerwig’s adaptation of The Chronicles of Narnia is set to make a significant splash in the film industry.
GRETA GERWIG’S ADAPTATION OF NARNIA
Imax will exclusively showcase the film for two weeks in a groundbreaking move before it streams on Netflix, according to Pink Villa.
This unique arrangement marks a pivotal moment in the relationship between streaming services and traditional cinema.
Imax CEO Rich Gelfond described the deal as “fairly complex.”
GRETA GERWIG AND THE FRANCHISE’S POTENTIAL
This reflected the intricate negotiations involved in aligning the interests of exhibitors, filmmakers, and streaming platforms, according to Collider.
He noted, “That deal took a pretty long time to put together.” This highlighted the challenges of merging theatrical and streaming strategies.
Despite these hurdles, Gelfond expressed confidence in the film’s potential. “This is the kind of movie that is very conducive to an Imax release,” due to its immersive storytelling capabilities.
The first instalment of Gerwig’s Narnia reboot is scheduled for release on Thanksgiving Day 2026.
CINEMATIC EXPERIENCE FOR ALL
Following its Imax run, it will be available on Netflix by Christmas of the same year.
This timing capitalises on the festive season, aiming to attract family audiences eager for cinematic experiences during the holidays, according to Screen Rant.
Gelfond also hinted at a broader vision for the franchise. Gelfond suggested that Netflix plans to adapt all seven of C.S. Lewis’s Narnia books into films.
He mentioned, “I think there are like eight movies planned.” This statement raised eyebrows since there are only seven books in the series.
GRETA GERWIG AND STREAMING GIANTS
It has sparked speculation that some films may be split into multiple parts or that additional stories could be created within the Narnia universe.
Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos framed this partnership as a strategic “release tactic” rather than a shift in their overall approach to theatrical releases.
This collaboration also illustrates a growing willingness among streaming giants to explore theatrical exclusivity. This can potentially reshape how blockbuster films reach audiences worldwide.
The Narnia deal is not an isolated incident for Imax.
OTHER PARTNERSHIPS
The company is actively expanding its partnerships in Hollywood, including a collaboration with Apple Original Films on an upcoming F1 movie.
Gelfond anticipates record-breaking box office revenue of approximately R22 billion in 2025, driven by increasing demand in markets like China.
While the partnership between Imax and Netflix is groundbreaking, Gelfond remains cautious about making such deals commonplace.
He stated, “We are not in a rush to do another one tomorrow,” indicating that future collaborations will depend on various factors aligning perfectly.
THE NARNIA MOVIES
If Narnia proves successful at the box office, it could pave the way for more hybrid releases between streaming platforms and theatrical venues.
This could significantly change how studios market and distribute films, giving audiences new ways to experience their favourite stories.
Gerwig’s adaptation promises to bring fresh energy to Narnia, appealing to both long-time fans and new viewers alike.
With high expectations surrounding its visual spectacle and storytelling depth, this film could become a cornerstone of future cinematic franchises.
A NEW ERA OF FILMMAKING
Greta Gerwig’s Narnia adaptation represents a pivotal moment in film history—bridging the gap between streaming and traditional cinema.
As audiences eagerly await its release, this partnership may very well set the stage for a new era of filmmaking that embraces both formats.
