Heartbreak in Edendale: Six-Year-Old and Adult Killed in Water Tanker Crash

Mi7 Emergency Medical Services responded to a devastating Water Tanker Crash in Edendale, Pietermaritzburg, on Sunday evening after a tanker transporting drinking water lost control, veered off the roadway, and collided with two residential homes.

Upon arrival, Mi7 EMS crews found widespread devastation. Five patients had already been transported to nearby medical facilities by other emergency service providers, including a 13-year-old child who was extricated from beneath the wreckage in critical condition, two adults, and a six-month-old infant. The driver of the tanker was also among those transported for further medical care following the Water Tanker Crash.

Mi7 EMS teams remained on site to assist with ongoing rescue efforts. Two additional individuals were reported missing, prompting an extensive extrication operation led by the Pietermaritzburg Fire Department and SAPS Search and Rescue teams.

Water Tanker Crash aftermath

According to Mi7 National Group Director Colin David, two hours into the search, rescuers located the body of a six-year-old child trapped beneath the debris. A further two hours later, the body of an adult female was recovered from the rubble. Mi7 EMS paramedics performed on-scene declarations of death for both victims.

“We wish all those injured a full and successful recovery,” said David. “Our deepest condolences go out to the families and loved ones of the deceased during this heartbreaking time.”

Authorities are continuing investigations into the cause of the Water Tanker Crash.
