Home Affairs: Here is when you can replace your ID for free
The Home Affairs is able to replace the ID documents of South African citizens for free.

WHO QUALIFIES FOR A FREE ID REPLACEMENT AT HOME AFFAIRS?
According to information provided on the Home Affairs website, one group of people qualify to have their IDs replaced for free.
The department revealed that those who notice an error in the details on their ID they can get it corrected. The errors on the document will be fixed without any payment required.
“If you get your ID document and there are errors in the personal information contained within, the Department of Home Affairs will replace your ID document free of charge,” it stated.
Home Affairs clarified that those applying to correct errors in their ID will need to provide proof. This can be done by submitting the birth certificate together with the other required documents.
DOCUMENTS REQUIRED WHEN APPLYING TO CORRECT ERRORS ON ID
Those who need to apply to correct errors on their ID need to provide certain documents.
“To apply to correct information in your ID document, simply submit the following to any office of the Department of Home Affairs,” said Home Affairs.
The documents required are the following:
FORMS BI-9 AND BI-309
The forms BI-9 and BI-309 need to be completed with the correct information. Form BI-9 is used to apply for an ID, while the BI-309 form is the one used to apply to have the corrections made on the ID if there are errors.
BIRTH CERTIFICATE
A birth certificate will also be required as proof of the error on your ID.
NOTE: Photographs will not be required at smartcard offices as ID images are captured digitally.
