Kaizer Chiefs opted to sign Thabo Cele in midfield while former Bafana Bafana maestro Thulani Serero is returning to Cape Town.

Kaizer Chiefs linked Serero taught future Arsenal captain a few tricks

Serero has spent the majority of his playing career in Holland’s Eredivisie. He was with Ajax for six years from 2011-2017, where he made 121 appearances for the club. One pretty cool thing about Serero is that once upon a time, he formed a super-efficient midfield partnership with current Arsenal skipper Martin Ødegaard. The pair dovetailed wonderfully at Vitesse Arnhem in 2018 and 2019 with “Cream” as the deepest-lying player in the Vitesse midfield and Ødegaard shuttling ahead of him in the number 8 role. Not dissimilar to how he currently operates with the Gunners.

Experience in the Champions League

Thulani Serero made 11 appearances in the esteemed UEFA Champions League, the last of those was in the 2014-2015 campaign for Ajax Amsterdam. In the early days of his career, Serero dazzled for Ajax Cape Town as an attacking midfielder. A Classic number 10. He was named the PSL player of the season in 2010-11, rewarding his creative displays for the Mother City side. His value peaked in 2015 while with Dutch giants Ajax when he was estimated to be worth R4m (R77 million). Although it’s a decade later, wouldn’t Chiefs benefit from his vast experience for at least a season?

43 Bafana Bafana caps, could have been more?

No matter what the reasoning, it’s a shame that Serero never produced his best for the national team. 43 caps isn’t a bad tally by any means, but a player of his quality and European experience should have been more instrumental for his country. There were some disciplinary issues along the way, but that’s often part of the package with talented footballers.

‘Cream’ joining City despite persistent Kaizer Chiefs links

Former Bafana Bafana midfielder Thulani Serero is a free agent and on the brink of signing for Cape Town City. Kaizer Chiefs fans want the former Ajax Amsterdam and FC Twente schemer in the engine room for Nasreddine Nabi’s side. The diminutive star has won 43 caps for South Africa in a distinguished career which has seen him enjoy club stints in the Netherlands and the UAE.

Speaking on X, a fan had this to say:

“Please sign Serero before the Sundowns game to partner Cele. We can’t afford to play them with what we have now…age is just a number, Pirates signed Makhaula..”

Will Kaizer Chiefs regret missing out on Serero?
