Human Settlements Minister Thembi Simelane has once again defended herself against allegations of corruption, this time regarding her former role as a project director at Vitrovian, a company that was contracted to Eskom.

Allegations of Inflated Prices at Kusile Power Station

On Monday night, Simelane responded to a News24 report that alleged Vitrovian had inflated prices for work done at Kusile power station during her time at the company.

The report suggested that the company benefited financially from overcharging Eskom, raising concerns about Simelane’s involvement in the matter.

However, Simelane firmly denied any wrongdoing, stating that her role as project director did not give her access to the company’s financial transactions with Eskom or any other client.

Simelane’s Response to the Allegations

Through her spokesperson, Tsekiso Machike, Simelane dismissed the claims as misleading and sensationalized journalism.

“Once again, I hasten to correct the misconception that the position of project director would have in any way allowed me to enjoy intimate knowledge of the company’s financial transactions with Eskom or any client of the company. This assertion is simply false and is bordering on gutter journalism,” said Machike.

Simelane also expressed frustration at what she called repeated attempts to discredit her through unverified accusations.

Existing Scrutiny Over VBS Loan Controversy

These new allegations come amid ongoing scrutiny of Simelane’s past financial dealings, particularly her September 2024 appearance before Parliament’s justice committee.

During that hearing, questions were raised about a loan she received to purchase a coffee shop through a middleman linked to the now-defunct VBS Mutual Bank.

Critics argued that the loan transaction raised ethical concerns and suggested possible financial misconduct.

However, Simelane has consistently denied any wrongdoing, stating that the loan was obtained through legitimate channels and that she had no knowledge of any irregularities.

Calls for Further Investigation

Following the latest Kusile allegations, opposition parties and corruption watchdogs have called for a full investigation into Simelane’s past dealings.

Some members of Parliament are demanding that:

  • Eskom and the government launch an independent audit of all Vitrovian contracts.

  • The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) and law enforcement agencies determine whether there was any criminal activity involved.

  • Simelane be held accountable if any wrongdoing is proven.

However, Simelane has insisted that she has nothing to hide and welcomes any investigation that will clear her name.

Political and Public Reactions

The allegations against Simelane have sparked mixed reactions in political circles and among the public.

  • Critics argue that her name being linked to multiple corruption scandals raises red flags about her suitability for public office.

  • Supporters claim that she is being unfairly targeted and that these allegations are part of a political smear campaign to tarnish her reputation.

Meanwhile, Eskom has yet to comment officially on the accusations related to Vitrovian’s contracts at Kusile, though the company has faced numerous corruption scandals in recent years.

What Happens Next?

With mounting pressure for transparency, Simelane may face further questioning in Parliament or a formal investigation into her previous financial dealings.

As South Africa continues to grapple with corruption in government and state-owned enterprises, the outcome of this case could set an important precedent for accountability and ethical leadership.
