Ingonyama Trust Board: Land Reform portfolio committee wants urgent meeting with King Misuzulu

The portfolio committee on Land Reform and Rural Development says it wants an urgent meeting with Zulu King Misuzulu kaZwelithini, following his suspension of the Ingonyama Trust board.

The committee has also resolved to conduct an oversight visit to the Ingonyama Trust to get a better understanding of the challenges confronting the public entity.

On Tuesday, the committee held an urgent meeting with the Land Reform and Rural Development Minister, Mzwanele Nyhontso, for a briefing on the latest developments at the trust.

The portfolio committee met following media reports about the suspension of the board and other governance issues at the Ingonyama Trust.

The committee appealed to the minister, as the executive authority, to resolve the board’s governance challenges within the confines of the law.

Some members of Parliament (MPs) also raised questions about King Misuzulu’s authority to suspend the board.

Minister Nyhontso said the allegations need to be tested through an investigation.

“You meet the board they will come up with accusations, including accusing the king. They will tell you that the king wants to run his own board in his own way and using the monies or instructing them to buy a farm and so on. All those things they are all not written down.”

The committee said it considers the matters of the Ingonyama Trust among its priority issues and will meet the king as a matter of urgency.
