MAMELODI SUNDOWNS GOALKEEPER WINS BIG AT CAF AWARDS
The Mamelodi Sundowns star was one of the night’s biggest winners after winning the Interclub Player of the Year and Goalkeeper of the Year Awards.
Ronwen Williams became the first South African to win the Goalkeeper of the Year award. He also became the second Premier Soccer League player to win the Interclub Player of the Year Award.
In 2016, his Sundowns teammate and Ugandian legend Denis Onyango won the prestigious award.
Ronwen Williams also won the Interclub Player of the Year Award. He became the second South African player to win the award after his Bafana Bafana teammate Percy Tau.
The Al Ahly star was named the Interclub Player of the Year in 2023. However, this recognition came after he missed out on the Yachine Trophy.
The Mamelodi Sundowns star was nominated for the Ballon d’Or’s Yachine Trophy, which recognises the best goalkeepers in the world, but fell short and was ranked ninth-best goalkeeper in the world.
SPRINGBOK CAPTAIN SIYA KOLISI GIVES RONWEN WILLIAMS HIS FLOWERS
However, after winning big at the Caf Awards, Springbok captain Siya Kolisi took to Instagram to congratulate Ronwen Williams, who is not only from his hometown Port Elizabeth.
Siya Kolisi posted, “Bhayinaar congrats, my brother, so well deserved, you’ve been flying the flag so high and inspiring us all. Danko @ronwen30 Siyabulela, #thebestisyettocome. 041 siyaqhuba mani.”
Against the post, Ronwen Williams quickly replied, “Thank you, my fellow baainaar, and thanks for inspiring me to be even better. We keep going, Tata.”
Fans were undoubtedly more than convinced that real recognise real. Siya Kolisi achieved a similar feat with the Springboks despite winning silverware.
Siya Kolisi led the Springboks to their fourth Rugby World Cup in 2023 in France. The win made the Boks the first team to win four Rugby World Cups.
They achieved this feat in only eight appearances. In addition, he became the second captain to win the trophy back-to-back.
