International Organization for Migration (IOM) Hiring: Caregivers (Multiple Positions)
,The International Organization for Migration (IOM) is seeking compassionate and dedicated individuals to fill the role of Caregiver at its facility in Patra, Greece. This position is pivotal in supporting Unaccompanied Minors (UMCs) residing in the organization’s accommodation centers, ensuring their safety, well-being, and integration into the community.
About the Role
The Caregiver position in Patra is designed to provide direct assistance, care, and support to vulnerable children and adolescents who are unaccompanied minors. The successful candidate will work under the overall supervision of the Project Coordinator and the direct supervision of the Shelter Coordinator to facilitate daily activities within the center, maintaining a safe and nurturing environment for the minors.
Candidates may include internal staff members, such as those currently employed with IOM, as well as external applicants who meet the specified qualifications. Internal candidates are defined as staff members holding a regular, fixed-term, or short-term contract, including Junior Professional Officers (JPOs), staff on Special Leave Without Pay (SLWOP), or staff on secondment or loan. It’s important to note that staff moving from a fixed-term to an ungraded position will not retain their previous contract type.
Context of the Work
IOM operates five Accommodation Centers for Unaccompanied Minors across Greece, providing more than just shelter. These centers offer a comprehensive array of services including basic needs support, hygiene, legal counseling, psychosocial support, medical assistance, Greek language programs, intercultural activities, and career guidance. The goal is to create a supportive environment where minors can feel safe, valued, and empowered to build a future.
The Patra center is part of the broader Greece Programme—funded by the Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund 2021-2027—and aims to ensure the protection and well-being of unaccompanied minors, facilitating their social inclusion and safeguarding their rights.
Key Responsibilities
The Caregiver will perform a variety of routine and essential duties, including but not limited to:
- Assisting in the daily operations of the center, following instructions from the Shelter Coordinator and scientific staff.
- Supporting the implementation of individual daily programs for minors, in collaboration with social workers.
- Escorting minors to social, medical, or legal appointments as needed.
- Providing guidance on personal hygiene, cleanliness, and household routines.
- Ensuring the availability and proper storage of necessary supplies such as hygiene items, clothing, and stationery.
- Overseeing the maintenance and security of the center’s facilities, educating minors on respecting the property.
- Maintaining accurate records of minors’ arrivals and departures, including visitors.
- Responding effectively to emergencies or crises, alerting relevant staff swiftly.
- Coordinating with local authorities in situations that may threaten the safety of minors or staff.
- Ensuring the safety and security of minors during day and night shifts, including weekends and public holidays.
- Performing additional duties assigned by supervisors to support the center’s operations.
Qualifications & Skills
Educational Background:
- High school diploma obtained in Greece or from an accredited foreign institution listed in the UNESCO World Higher Education Database.
Experience:
- Previous experience or training related to child protection, unaccompanied minors, vulnerability management, refugee reception, or integration.
- Familiarity with direct assistance to migrants and refugees, especially children.
- Prior experience in a similar caregiving role is preferred.
- Experience working with diverse populations and in multicultural environments.
- Willingness to work flexible schedules, including day/night shifts, weekends, and holidays.
- A valid driver’s license with at least five years of driving experience is considered an asset.
Skills & Competencies:
- Ability to foster a safe, healthy, and protective environment for children.
- Strong organizational and facilitation skills, along with excellent interpersonal and communication abilities.
- Deep understanding of childhood development stages and needs.
- Capacity to respond promptly and appropriately during emergencies.
- Proficiency with standard IT tools and software, including MS Office.
- Fluency in Greek (written and spoken) is mandatory.
- Knowledge of English, French, or other languages is an asset.

Additional Information
The position is subject to funding confirmation and local recruitment procedures. Candidates must hold valid residence and work permits for Greece and provide proof of full COVID-19 vaccination, as required.
