About the Role

As digital technology continues to evolve, so does its impact on the environment. The ICT sector is accountable for a notable portion of global greenhouse gas emissions. To address this, ITU’s Telecommunication Development Bureau (BDT) emphasizes the importance of sustainability in digital advancements. The selected consultant will play a pivotal role under the guidance of the Climate Change Officer within the Climate Change and Emergency Telecommunications Division. The consultant will help implement green digital transformation projects that aim to minimize the environmental footprint of the ICT sector while fostering sustainable digital development.

The Mission of the BDT

The Telecommunication Development Bureau (BDT) is dedicated to coordinating the work of the telecommunication sector of the ITU. This unit’s key objectives include promoting universal access to affordable and high-quality telecommunications, fostering equitable use of ICTs, and empowering communities for sustainable development. By working across four functional areas—Operations Coordination, Projects and Partnerships, Digital Networks & Environment, and Digital Knowledge Society—the BDT aims to create innovative strategies that lay the foundation for a sustainable digital future.

Responsibilities of the Consultant

The consultant will have several responsibilities aimed at enhancing the effectiveness of the BDT’s green digital transformation initiatives. Some of the principal duties include:

  2. Drafting Transition Plans: Developing comprehensive digital net-zero transition plans that align with national climate priorities and are ready for stakeholder review. This aspect of the role is crucial as it connects the global sustainability agenda with local and national contexts.
  3. Data Visualization: Supporting the maintenance of a data visualization dashboard to track the digital sector’s climate footprint. The consultant will ensure that stakeholders have access to clear and actionable data.
  4. Needs Assessments: Conducting assessments to evaluate current data collection frameworks and identify areas for capacity building. This responsibility ensures that stakeholders are equipped to make informed decisions regarding climate action.
  5. Research and Reporting: Leading research initiatives to monitor greenhouse gas emissions and energy use in the ICT sector. The consultant will also prepare technical content for online learning via the ITU Academy, sharing knowledge and expertise with a wider audience.
  6. Project Monitoring: Participating in online meetings with project teams and government representatives to track progress and facilitate coordination among various stakeholders.

  • An updated data visualization dashboard for climate tracking.

Proven collaboration with various stakeholders, particularly in government and telecommunications, is critical.
  • Languages: Proficiency in English at an advanced level is required. Knowledge of a second official language of the Union at an intermediate level, along with local languages, is advantageous.
