The Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) is excited to present our Internship Programme, which serves as an exceptional opportunity for applicants seeking to gain valuable work experience while contributing to the fields of Science, Engineering, Technology (SET), Humanities, Social Sciences (HSS), and Research Development and Innovation. Our program is specifically tailored for unemployed graduates eager to develop their skills and make meaningful contributions to their host institutions.

Who We Are

At HSRC, our mission is to establish a robust system for research and innovation that addresses the challenges faced by South Africa. We are committed to empowering young graduates through mentorship and hands-on experience, thus bridging the gap between academia and industry. Our Internship Programme aims to cultivate a new generation of skilled professionals who are well-prepared for the job market and who can actively contribute to the advancement of the National System of Innovation (NSI).

What We Do

The HSRC Internship Programme presents various benefits, including:

  • Skill Development: We focus on enhancing the skill sets of graduates in both SET and HSS fields through rigorous training and mentorship. By building a skilled workforce, we aim to increase the overall talent pool available for the NSI.
  • Career Opportunities: Interns gain invaluable work experience that aligns with their qualifications, significantly increasing their chances of securing employment post-internship.
  • Focus on Equity: We are dedicated to building capacity in research management across public higher education institutions (HEIs) and research institutions, ensuring equitable access for marginalized groups while promoting inclusion in the research sector.
  • Lifelong Learning: Through the internship experience, we encourage continuous professional development, reinforcing the importance of lifelong learning as a pillar for personal and professional growth.

Who is Eligible?

To be eligible for the HSRC Internship Programme, candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • Citizenship: Must be a South African citizen or a South African Permanent Resident, possessing a valid South African Identity Document.
  • Age: Candidates should be 35 years of age or younger at the time of appointment to the internship programme.
  • Educational Qualifications: Applicants must hold a National Qualifications Framework (NQF) level 7 to 9 qualification from a Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) accredited higher education institution, specifically in fields such as Science, Engineering, Technology, Research Development, Innovation, Social Sciences, or Humanities.

Host Institutions

Our partner institutions play a crucial role in facilitating the internship experience. To qualify as host institutions, they must:

  • Be actively involved in the relevant disciplines of SET, HSS, and research development.
  • Provide long-term mentorship through mentors who have been employed at the institution for at least two years or who hold a permanent position.
  • Ensure that interns have access to necessary infrastructure, including workstations, computers, and resources for remote work.
  • Actively participate in mentor forums and training programs provided by the HSRC.

Our Approach

A key strength of the HSRC Internship Programme lies in its robust mentorship component. By pairing interns with experienced mentors, we expose them to essential skills directly linked to their fields of study. This hands-on mentoring helps equip interns with the necessary competencies for a successful transition into their careers.

Moreover, the programme includes a comprehensive capacity development plan that collaborates with various stakeholders for transversal skills training. Interns participate in workshops focused on soft skills such as effective communication, professional etiquette, time management, and team collaboration. Additionally, an Employee Wellness Programme provides psycho-social support and advice on legal matters and financial management, ensuring interns’ holistic development.

Remuneration and Duration

The HSRC offers a monthly stipend to interns throughout the 24-month internship. This financial support helps interns focus on their professional development without the added pressure of financial constraints.

Recruitment Process

The recruitment process for the HSRC Internship Programme involves several key steps:

  1. Call for Host Institutions: We invite institutions to express their interest in hosting interns.
  2. Graduate Applications: Graduates are encouraged to apply for the internship.
  3. Intern Portal Access: Successful host institutions are granted access to the intern portal to identify suitable candidates.
  4. Interviews: Hosts shortlist candidates, conduct interviews, and return feedback to the HSRC.
  5. Verification and Contracting: The HSRC verifies the eligibility of selected applicants and facilitates their contracts.

Additional Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible, applicants must:

  • Hold any of the following qualifications:
  • NQF Level 7 Bachelor’s, Advanced Diploma, or B-Tech Degree
