Kaizer Chiefs head coach Nasreddine Nabi has defended new signing Tashreeq Morris after the striker fired blanks against his former team SuperSport United.

Amakhosi went down 4-1 at the FNB Stadium on Tuesday night to suffer their sixth league defeat of the season. Gaston Sirino was sent off during the game leaving Chiefs to finish the match with 10 men.

Morris, who was signed in January, was hoping to net for his new team having scored against his current team in the first round. The new signing fired blanks for Kaizer Chiefs despite playing a full 90 minutes against SuperSport.

The 31-year-old striker is one of the three new players at Amakhosi. Thabo Cele and Makabi Lilepo are the two others and appear to have hit the ground running. Lilepo has already netted twice in four matches for his new club.

After Tuesday’s match, Nabi defended Morris. “Today’s game was an exception and we cannot evaluate players on one game,” he said.

Kaizer Chiefs new signing falls flat against old team

“We have to evaluate players on the many games that they play. Today’s team was very tired.

“It’s an exceptional game, but as I said, we cannot evaluate players just on this game. This game should not be used as a reference.

“In the previous game, Tashreed gave his all, he gave all his energy and you could see today that it has impacted his physical strength.”

The signing of Morris has raised eyebrows but the Kaizer Chiefs coach appears to have faith in Morris. Most of Nabi’s signings this season have been on point, especially the two centre backs.
