Kaizer Chiefs eye former academy star, but he could come at a hefty price tag.

Chiefs are once again looking to bring back one of their former youth development stars. This time, they have their eyes on Cape Town Spurs defender Lungelo Bhengu.

According to sources, Amakhosi have inquired about the 24-year-old, who left the club’s academy in 2019 to join Maritzburg United. Now, they may have to dig deep into their pockets to secure his return.

Bhengu’s price could cost Chiefs millions

Reports suggest that Bhengu’s market value falls between R5 million and R10 million—a significant amount for a player they once had in their ranks.

“The interest is there, but now they have to consider the money they will pay. You know he was in their development until 2019 when he left to join Maritzburg United. Actually, he was released, and unfortunately, they want him back now, and it will cost them more money. From what I know, his price ranges between R5m to R10m, but it’s subject to negotiations. You should remember he is only 24 years old and has a great future ahead of him. So let’s wait and see,” a source revealed.

Chiefs’ costly history of buying back their own players

If Chiefs finalize this deal, it will be another example of them paying for a player they previously developed.

“If this happens, it won’t be for the first time. It happened with Zitha Kwinika as well as Mduduzi Mdantsane. Both of them are Chiefs development products, but look at how much they paid for them. It’s about to happen again now with Lungelo Bhengu. Maybe this will be a lesson to them this time around,” the source added.

Bhengu could solve right-back dilemma

Chiefs have struggled to find a solid right-back, often relying on midfielder Njabulo Blom to cover the position. This makes Bhengu’s potential return even more crucial. His natural defensive abilities, positional awareness, and experience in the PSL could provide the stability Chiefs need on the right flank.

By signing Bhengu, Amakhosi would not only strengthen their backline but also allow Blom to focus on his preferred midfield role. This strategic move could enhance the team’s defensive depth and create more competition for places in the starting XI.

As negotiations unfold in the coming weeks, all eyes will be on Chiefs to see if they are willing to invest heavily in a player they previously let go. Will they break the bank to bring Bhengu back, or will they look elsewhere for a right-back solution? The answer should become clearer soon.
