Kaizer Chiefs have conceded nearly 30 goals despite spending R20 million on defenders
Kaizer Chiefs have signed four defenders for close to R20 million this season but they have the third-worst defensive record in the league.
Amakhosi have conceded 23 times in 18 games in the Betway Premiership this season. In cup competitions, Chiefs have been scored four times and that was in the Carling Knockout Cup against Mamelodi Sundowns.
In 22 matches across all competitions, Kaizer Chiefs have let in 27 goals which shows how poor their defence has been. Their most expensive signing was Rushwin Dortley followed by Fiacre Ntwari and Inacio Miguel. The former Cape Town Spurs man arrives for R10 million and has been solid but let down by other defenders and midfielders around him.
Former Kaizer Chiefs defender Dominic Isaacs said there problem with Amakhosi was not just the defence but the midfield.
“That’s a million dollar question because everybody always has different opinions on what could be the problem,” Isaacs told FARPost.
“The defence doesn’t start at the back; it starts there up front, then comes down to the midfield. It’s how they lose the ball, how they recover and react after losing the ball. Is there enough protection for the defence from the front and in the midfield?
Kaizer Chiefs have let in 27 goals so far this season
“I know the coach [Nasreddine Nabi] wants to play on the front foot, attacking football and all that. But there is a huge risk in playing that kind of football, and the players are not aware of this after losing the ball. That’s why Chiefs have been inconsistent at the back,” Isaacs said.
Kaizer Chiefs are in action this coming weekend against Mamelodi Sundowns. Amakhosi are currently sixth in the Betway Premiership.
Will Chiefs improve this season?
