Kaizer Chiefs in the race as Sekhukhune hesitates on MLS move
Kaizer Chiefs in the race as Sekhukhune hesitates on Major League Soccer(MLS) move.
Despite reported interest from MLS club FC Tulsa, Jamie Webber’s future remains open for South African PSL clubs. Sources close to Sekhukhune United suggest that the club favours a local or European transfer over a move to the United States.
A trusted insider revealed that Sekhukhune United is reluctant to approve Webber’s transfer to MLS. The club is wary due to the struggles of other South African players, who faced limited game time after moving to the league.
“At the moment, it doesn’t look positive for Jamie to move to America. Yes, there is interest from there, but Sekhukhune United feels he still has a chance to play top PSL football or even move to Europe rather than go to America. They believe they have seen how some South African players have fared in the MLS and don’t want him to face the same challenges,” the source confirmed.
Chiefs ready to make their move
Sekhukhune United’s stance presents an opportunity for Kaizer Chiefs to reignite their long-standing interest in Webber. Chiefs initially pursued the midfielder when he played for SuperSport United, but he ultimately joined Sekhukhune instead.
“This gives Kaizer Chiefs the chance to pursue his services. You know they were interested in him when he was at SuperSport United before he joined Sekhukhune United? And now they are still looking at him. So, if he doesn’t move to MLS or Europe, then Chiefs stand a better chance of signing him this time around,” the source added.
Sekhukhune holds the final say
Webber remains under contract with Sekhukhune United, meaning the club holds full control over any potential transfer.
“He is a Sekhukhune United player. He signed a three-year deal when he joined the team in 2023, which only expires in June 2026. So, for any team to sign him, they have to buy him from Sekhukhune United. The club will decide whether a local move or a European transfer is preferable over the MLS, and that’s likely what will happen in the end,” the source stated.
Webber’s current form and future
The 27-year-old midfielder was a consistent performer for Sekhukhune United last season. However, his role has diminished in the current campaign, making a potential transfer more likely. With Chiefs monitoring his situation closely, Webber could soon be on the move, either to a PSL giant or a European destination.
