Kaizer Chiefs news: Ben Youssef’s title talk, Mdu’s secret
Kaizer Chiefs have two huge games coming up and all the talk is around silverware and Mduduzi Shabalala against Orlando Pirates soon.
Ben Youssef’s title promise
Before their Nedbank Cup Round of 32 clash with Free Agents FC, assistant boss Khalil Ben Youssef says the club is targeting silverware on all fronts, starting with progress this weekend. In the medium term, he envisages Betway Premiership title success in the next two or three years.
Vis SABC Sport:
“To be honest with you what we’ve discussed about the project at Kaizer Chiefs is to beat the other team then next year or in two or three years it’s to fight for the league. We have to come back, when I was young, I remember I used to see Kaizer Chiefs in the African Cup [CAF competitions] in the finals or semifinals, it was one of the best teams in Africa,” Ben Youssef said.
Mdu Shabalala’s Pirates secret
21-year-old Kaizer Chiefs attacker Mduduzi Shabalala revealed he grew up supporting Orlando Pirates but says now he will “die a Chiefs fan”. The young attacker has become a key operator Chiefs in the 2024-2025 campaign, appearing in all of their Betway Premiership clashes and in a new number 10 role. He’s got four goals and an assist so far in the league this term.
‘Mdu’, as he is affectionately known, worshipped Thembinkosi Lorch when growing up in an all-Pirates household. With Lorch having moved on to Sundowns, there’s space in the fixture for another star to make a name for himself in South Africa’s premier club fixture.
Shabalala recalls the first Soweto Derby he attended in “about 2019 or 2020 where Chiefs were leading 1-0 and Lorch equalised after a pass from Ben Motshwari”.
Free Agents clash awaits
Free Agents FC midfielder Thulani Dhladhla isn’t over-awed by the prospect of a meeting with Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs. His side plays in the Gauteng ABC Motsepe League. They are massive underdogs, but they’re also aware that Chiefs lost to lowly Milford in this competition last season.
“I would say everyone at the club is excited that we are playing against Kaizer Chiefs, and personally, I am excited because I think it’s everyone’s dream to play against bigger clubs like Chiefs, Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns,” Dhladhla told media.
