A total of 17 entries were received on Monday for the 164th renewal of the Grade 1 L’Ormarins King’s Plate, South Africa’s premier weight-for-age mile.

The 2025 L’Ormarins King’s Plate will be run at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth on Saturday, 4 January and the entries received include Hollywoodbets Cape Guineas winner One Stripe.

Reigning champion Charles Dickens has retired to stud, while this year’s runner-up, See it Again, is entered once again.

Top Cape trainer Justin Snaith boasts five of the 17 entries.

Record prize money

As reported by The South African website, next January’s L’Ormarins King’s Plate will carry a record prize fund of R3 million.

That represents a 50% increase on the R2 million that was on offer this year.

The race is Race 7 on what will be a nine-race card, with the gates due to fly open at 16:10.

Supplementary entries will close on Friday, 27 December at 11:00 with declarations due on Monday, 30 December at 11:00.

Known for its strict white and blue dress code, the event dates back to 1861 and holds a special place in equestrian history as South Africa’s oldest continuous horse race.
