Major delays on N3 after fiery crash involving two trucks
Major delays on N3 after fiery crash involving two trucks! Motorists traveling along the N3 toll route have been urged to expect significant delays following a serious crash near Van Reenen’s Pass that left two trucks in flames and caused the complete closure of the road. The incident, which occurred earlier on Tuesday, has brought traffic to a standstill on one of South Africa’s busiest interprovincial routes.
The N3 is a key national artery connecting KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng, with thousands of vehicles using it daily, including commercial trucks transporting goods between Durban and Johannesburg. The crash has disrupted traffic between Cedara in KwaZulu-Natal and Heidelberg in Gauteng, a stretch that forms a vital economic corridor for the country.
Trucks Caught Fire After Collision
According to early reports from the N3 Toll Concession (N3TC), the accident occurred on the northbound side of the highway and involved two heavy-duty trucks. The collision resulted in both vehicles catching fire, sending plumes of thick black smoke into the sky and causing visibility issues for other motorists.
Fiery crash
Emergency services, including fire and rescue units, medical personnel, and road incident management teams, were dispatched to the scene shortly after the accident was reported. The intense flames and wreckage made it challenging for crews to respond immediately, further delaying cleanup and recovery efforts.
Tugela Toll Plaza Closed to Northbound Traffic
In response to the chaos caused by the incident, the Tugela Toll Plaza has been closed to northbound traffic. This move is part of an effort to divert vehicles away from the affected area and to manage the growing backlog of traffic stretching across several kilometers.
The closure has compounded delays, especially for freight and logistics companies operating time-sensitive deliveries, as well as for holidaymakers and daily commuters. Long queues of stationary vehicles have been reported in both directions, and frustration is mounting among motorists stuck on the route.
Motorists Urged to Postpone Travel
Thania Dhoogra, spokesperson for the N3 Toll Concession, issued a statement urging motorists to reconsider their travel plans and avoid the area if possible.
“Motorists are advised to please delay travel to the area if possible and to please remain patient as emergency services are working to restore traffic flow as quickly and safely as possible,” said Dhoogra.
She added that the road closure could last several hours, depending on how quickly the fire-damaged vehicles can be removed and the road surface assessed for damage. Authorities are also working to ensure that all safety measures are in place before reopening the route to traffic.
No Immediate Reports of Fatalities
As of now, there have been no confirmed fatalities, though emergency teams are still assessing the scene. It is unclear how many individuals were injured or whether the truck drivers have been accounted for. More information is expected as the investigation unfolds.
Authorities are also expected to conduct an inquiry into the cause of the crash, including whether driver fatigue, mechanical failure, or speeding played a role. Van Reenen’s Pass is known for its steep gradients and challenging driving conditions, which have contributed to several accidents in the past.
Alternative Routes and Travel Advisory
Motorists currently en route are advised to consider alternative routes if they need to travel between Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal. The R74 via Bergville or the R103 through Ladysmith are sometimes used as detours, though these roads may not be ideal for heavy trucks or high volumes of traffic.
The N3TC has committed to providing real-time updates via their social media platforms and website. Travelers are encouraged to monitor these channels and use navigation apps to track congestion and receive detour information.
As recovery operations continue, authorities are appealing for patience and cooperation from the public. The priority remains ensuring the safety of all road users while clearing the wreckage and restoring traffic flow on this crucial route.
