Mamelodi Sundowns star set to exit, but will Kaizer Chiefs attack and make their move?

With just one year left on his contract, Sundowns midfielder Neo Maema could be on his way out as he looks for more game time. But will Chiefs see this as an opportunity to secure a quality player?

Since the arrival of new coach Miguel Cardoso, Maema has struggled for minutes on the pitch. He has featured only four times under Cardoso this season, compared to nine appearances under former coach Manqoba Mngqithi.

Sundowns restructuring could spell the end

Insiders suggest that Maema is likely to depart at the start of next season, as Sundowns’ technical team aims to reshape the squad. The club is reportedly planning to downsize, and Maema may be one of the midfielders who does not make the cut.

“Things are not looking good for Neo (Maema). He could be one of the players set to leave the club next season. The coach has his own players he wants to continue with, and it seems Maema is not in his plans at the moment,” a source revealed.

Could Chiefs capitalize on this opportunity?

Despite his contract running until June 2026, Maema’s departure could come through a transfer sale, a loan move, or a settlement agreement.

“Yes, as much as they would like to let him go, he still has a contract with Sundowns. It’s either they sell him, loan him out, or reach an amicable solution. But since they are cutting down the squad, he could be one player they are ready to let go. This could be a good opportunity for Chiefs to get a quality player,” the source added.

Maema’s journey with Sundowns

Neo Maema made a high-profile switch from Bloemfontein Celtic to Mamelodi Sundowns in 2021, signing a five-year contract that extends until June 2026. Over the past few seasons, he has showcased his talent and adaptability, but limited playing time under the new coaching staff has cast doubt on his future at the club. With uncertainty looming, a move to another PSL giant like Kaizer Chiefs could offer him the fresh start he needs to regain his form and prominence in South African football.

Will Amakhosi make a move for Maema, or will another club swoop in first?
