Matric results: Here are the top achievers in KwaZulu-Natal
The matric class of 2024 in KwaZulu-Natal achieved a historic 89.5% pass rate, and some of the top achievers nationally are from the province.
The KZN Department of Education announced its provincial results on Tuesday, 14 January, and honored the top 10 candidates for their excellent results. Some of the prizes included laptops and bursaries.
KWAZULU-NATAL TOP ACHIEVERS IN THE MATRIC CLASS OF 2024
KZN Education MEC Sipho Hlomuka revealed that all the districts in the province achieved above 80% and that no school had a 0% pass rate.
In addition, two candidates from KwaZulu-Natal were among the top 39 learners who were invited by the Minister of Basic Education Siviwe Gwarube in Johannesburg for the official results announcement on Monday, 13 January.
Here are some of the key highlights:
- 161 962 candidates wrote the National Senior Certificate (NSC) in KZN and 144 990 passed (89.5%).
- Bachelor passes increased from 72 099 in 2023 to 84 000 in 2024, the highest in the country, marking a significant improvement from 45.7% in 2023 to 52.2%.
- KZN also recorded an increase in schools achieving a 100% pass rate, from 246 in 2023 to 321 in 2024.
- Special and Correctional Services Centres also achieved a 100% pass rate.

- Caden Govender – Greenbury Secondary
- Manqoba Sibusiso Buthelezi – Zimele Secondary School
- Kwandokuhle Mhlungu – Phendukani Full Service High School
- Ayanda Mkhize – Adam’s College
- Amanda Ngema from Vukile High School and Philile Nokubonga Mngqayi from Nkombose Secondary were tied in fifth position.
- Philisiwe Sthandiswa Ngubane – Zuzulwazi Junior Secondary
- Shai Pitout – Little Flower Secondary
- Nonhlonipho Nzuza – Sinethezekile Combined School
- Mari Relling – Westville Girls High
- Gift Mlambo – Mandla Mthethwa School of Excellence
