Role Purpose

The Production Journalist (Night Team) will produce and edit online-ready content, manage breaking news, and ensure News24’s high editorial standards, working irregular hours to support a 24/7 news cycle.

Key Duties

• Produce online-ready content with appropriate visuals and collateral to enrich copy.
• Copy-taste relevant local and international content for News24’s audience.
• Edit content to align with News24’s editorial style and standards.
• Moderate reader comments to maintain constructive engagement.
• Compile breaking news stories and aggregations quickly as needed.
• Manage content flow from various sections to the main News24 site when the site editor is unavailable.
• Run live blogs for major news events.
• Send out newsletters to subscribers as required.
• Work irregular hours, including weekends and public holidays, independently.

Eligibility Criteria

• South African citizen with a valid ID and work authorization.
• Relevant tertiary qualification (e.g., Journalism, Media Studies).
• 3–5 years of journalism experience as a reporter, sub-editor, or content producer/production journalist.
• Proven experience in an online news environment.
• Clean criminal and credit record, verified via background checks.

Required Skills

• Excellent writing, rewriting, and sub-editing skills.
• Strong visual selection skills, with photo editing and basic graphics knowledge advantageous.
• Deep knowledge of local and international news, with a passion for breaking news.
• Versatility, adaptability, and ability to work under pressure with short turnaround times.
• Excellent attention to detail and CMS proficiency.

Preferences

• Residents of Cape Town or nearby Western Cape areas.
• Proficiency in English and one other South African language.
