Internship Opportunity: Finance

Duration: Two-Year Programme

Monthly Stipend: R 9, 306.18 

The Mining Qualifications Authority (MQA) is a Sector Education and Training Authority (SETA) that facilitates skills development under the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET), and supports mine health and safety under the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE) for the mining and minerals sector under Skills Development Act (SDA) 97 of 1998 and Mine Health and Safety Act (MHSA) 29 of 1996, respectively.

The MQA would like to invite qualifying individuals to apply for an internship opportunity within its Finance Unit. Unemployed individuals who have never participated in an internship programme are invited to apply. The successful intern will be appointed for a period of twenty-four (24) months.

This opportunity is only available to South African Citizens only. 

Reporting to the Finance Manager; the successful candidate will be exposed to the following:

  • Processing invoices on the accounting software;
  • Processing electronic payments;
  • Creditor’s statement reconciliations;
  • Processing journals;
  • Creditors control account reconciliations;
  • Bank reconciliations;
  • Financial internal controls;
  • General administration in a finance environment;
  • Any other functions as delegated by the supervisor

Minimum Requirements:

  • A grade 12 or matric certificate;
  • National Diploma or equivalent at NQF level 6 in the Financial and Accounting field;
  • A Bachelor’s Degree or an equivalent at NQF Level 7 in the Financial and Accounting field will be an added advantage.

Competencies

The candidate must possess the following:

  • Good communication and interpersonal skills;
  • An understanding of legislation and developments pertaining to education and training;
  • Ability to work under pressure;
  • A proactive attitude;
  • Ability to pay attention to detail; and
  • Proficiency in MS Office packages.

Officer: Research

Paterson Grade:  C4

Remuneration: R545, 317.34 CTC (plus a possible 20% performance bonus)

PURPOSE:

To conduct rigorous research on the skills landscape of the mining and minerals sector (MMS), generating actionable insights to inform and drive effective skills development initiatives with the MQA.

The successful candidate will report to the Skills Development and Research Manager.

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS:

  • Research Planning: Contribute to the development of the MQA’s annual research agenda, establishing relevant research methodologies, sampling techniques, and developing research instruments.
  • Data Collection: Collection of both qualitative and quantitative data (e.g. conducting semi-structured interviews, focus groups, administering surveys etc.). This also includes desktop research/literature reviews.
  • Data Management: Cleaning, weighting, processing, and analysing research data. Ensuring data accuracy, security, and compliance with relevant data analytic approach. Organising and maintaining research databases.
  • Report Writing: Compile reports and updates on skills development research studies.
  • Knowledge Dissemination: Develop and present research to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Research Quality Assurance: Ensure research quality and implement quality control processes throughout the entire research process.
  • Project Management: Manage research projects to ensure timely completion and quality deliverables in accordance with set timelines and allocated budget.
  • Knowledge Management: Maintaining research outputs and staying up-to-date with skills development trends in the MMS.
  • Research Administration: Maintain accurate research records, assist with financial tracking, coordinate meetings, seminars, workshops, conferences, and manage research resources.

KEY REQUIREMENTS: QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE AND COMPETENCIES

Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s degree in a related field (preferably in Social Sciences, Economics or Statistics) at NQF level 7.
  • A Postgraduate/ Honours Degree in a related field (preferably in Social Sciences) at NQF level 8 will be an added advantage.

Experience

  • A minimum of 3 years of research experience (encompassing both qualitative and quantitative methodologies) gained in either the public or private sector, ideally in a comparable role or with a proven track record of conducting research or market research.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in using both statistical analysis software (SPSS) and qualitative data analysis software (ATLAS.ti or NVivo), evidenced by examples of previous research projects or analyses utilizing these tools.
  • Proven experience to produce and deliver clear, concise research reports and presentations tailored for diverse audiences.
  • Proven track record of successful project management in research studies, both independently and collaboratively. (Please provide a list of previous research projects, highlighting your specific role and responsibilities in each).

Competencies:

Knowledge required: Thorough understanding of the MMS and the skills development landscape. Understanding of the entire research process. Knowledge of relevant legislation, policies and strategies or plans for skills development.

Skills required: Advanced computer skills (Ms Excel, Word, Teams, PPT), statistical and qualitative techniques, organisational skills including time management, communication verbal / non-verbal, problem-solving skills, ability to synthesise information and present in a simple accessible way.

Attributes required: People orientation, results-driven, perseverance /tenacity, attention to detail, delivery and deadline driven, willingness to learn and ability to work under pressure, integrity.
