Mohamed Salah Claims Third FWA Player of the Year Award After Historic Season
Mohamed Salah has been named the Football Writers’ Association (FWA) Player of the Year for 2025, following a phenomenal season that saw him spearhead Liverpool’s charge to a historic 20th English league title.
The Egyptian forward was the clear choice among football writers, receiving nearly 90 percent of the vote — the largest winning margin recorded in the 21st century. This marks the third time Salah has claimed the prestigious award, having previously won it in the 2017–18 and 2021–22 seasons. With this latest accolade, he joins Arsenal legend Thierry Henry as one of only two players to have won the award three times.
Mohamed Salah’s 2024–25 campaign was nothing short of extraordinary. He scored 28 goals and provided 18 assists in the Premier League, setting a new record for the most goal involvements in a 38-game season. Under the guidance of new manager Arne Slot, Salah’s attacking prowess and leadership were central to Liverpool’s success, as the club captured its first league title since 2020 and drew level with Manchester United’s long-standing record of 20 top-flight championships.
In addition to topping the scoring charts and contributing heavily to Liverpool’s attacking play, Salah was widely praised for his consistency, intelligence on the ball, and ability to deliver in crucial matches. Whether providing key assists or converting game-changing goals, he maintained his status as one of the most complete forwards in world football.
The FWA voting saw Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk finish in second place, having anchored the club’s defense with trademark composure and leadership. Newcastle United’s rising star Alexander Isak took third after a breakout season, while Arsenal’s midfield engine Declan Rice came in fourth following a strong campaign with the Gunners.
At 32 years old, Salah has shown no signs of decline. His technical ability, physical conditioning, and hunger for success remain undiminished. He recently reaffirmed his commitment to Liverpool by signing a new two-year contract extension, which keeps him at Anfield until the summer of 2027. His decision to stay at the club put an end to months of speculation about a possible move to Saudi Arabia or other European giants.
Salah’s new contract is seen as a major boost for Liverpool as they set their sights on surpassing Manchester United’s record and securing a 21st league title. With Salah staying put, the Reds will likely start the next campaign as favourites to continue their domestic dominance under Arne Slot’s leadership.
Reacting to the news of the award, Liverpool manager Arne Slot praised Salah’s dedication, describing him as “a once-in-a-generation player who elevates everyone around him.”
“He’s not just a world-class footballer,” Slot said, “he’s a leader, a professional, and an inspiration to the next generation. This award is deserved recognition for a truly exceptional season.”
Liverpool Star Joins Thierry Henry in Elite Group of Three-Time Winners
As both the men’s and women’s football seasons draw to a close, the FWA awards have highlighted the individual excellence that underpins team success. For Mohamed Salah, the recognition cements his place among the Premier League’s all-time greats — a status he continues to strengthen with every match, every goal, and every record he breaks.
Off the field, Salah remains a beloved figure in both Liverpool and Egypt. His philanthropy, humility, and unwavering professionalism have made him an ambassador for the sport. Fans and pundits alike lauded his latest achievement, noting that he continues to rewrite the narrative around longevity and consistency in modern football.
Meanwhile, in the women’s game, Arsenal’s Alessia Russo earned the FWA Women’s Footballer of the Year award. Russo became the second Arsenal player to claim the honour, finishing ahead of Manchester City striker and last year’s winner, Khadija Shaw. The England international played a key role in Arsenal’s title push and was lauded for her leadership and attacking flair throughout the campaign.
Russo’s emergence as a star in the Women’s Super League (WSL) further signals Arsenal’s growing influence in the women’s game. Her performances on the domestic and international stages have made her one of the most recognisable names in English football.
With another title in the bag, a new contract signed, and a historic third FWA award to his name, Salah’s legacy at Liverpool — and in world football — appears not only secure, but still very much in progress.
