More arrests expected in Wynberg Court shooting probe
More arrests expected in Wynberg Court shooting probe! Police say more arrests are imminent as investigations continue into the deadly shooting that took place inside the Wynberg Magistrates Court last week.
Detectives from the serious violent crimes unit made significant progress over the weekend, arresting a woman alleged to be the mastermind behind the brazen attack. The suspect, identified as Shireen Mathews, made her first court appearance on Monday, amid heightened security measures.

Second Suspect Detained
At the same time, a second suspect was also taken into custody in connection with the shooting, which left a taxi operator from Vrygrond dead. The man had been facing murder and attempted murder charges and was shot inside the courtroom in what authorities believe was a targeted hit.
Police have confirmed that four additional arrests are expected as part of the ongoing investigation. The shooting has sent shockwaves through the justice system, raising serious concerns about security protocols in South African courthouses.
Security Tightened Amid Criticism
Security was visibly tighter at the court on Monday. Officers conducted thorough searches of individuals entering the building, and all members of the public were led through a metal detector. This followed criticism that metal detectors were non-functional at the time of the shooting.
The deceased’s attorney told Eyewitness News last week that the metal detectors were not working, sparking outrage over the apparent security lapse that enabled firearms to be brought into the courtroom.

Acting Provincial Police Commissioner Bongani Maqashalala was present during Monday’s court proceedings. He told the media that the Department of Justice was responsible for access control and that further discussions would be held to address the lax security measures.
Mathews is due back in court on Wednesday next week, as police continue to piece together how such a violent attack was orchestrated and carried out within a supposedly secure space.
