CORE PURPOSE OF JOB
Reporting to the CEO, the Director will provide overall direction and management of the internal operations of SAIMI, enabling the smooth operation of the Institute and ensuring delivery in key result areas to facilitate SAIMI’s strategic positioning in the maritime sector. This will include the administrative management of the Institute’s governance, human resources, and financial matters. Furthermore, the incumbent will provide the operational interface for SAIMI with the Nelson Mandela University and other strategic partners, whilst providing high-level strategic support to the CEO towards achieving SAIMI’s key objectives.
KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS
- Provide strategic operational support to the CEO
1.1 Support the CEO in providing strategic direction for SAIMI in respect of operations, underpinned by achievable operational plans.
1.2 Develop operational performance plans aligned to SAIMI strategic goals.
1.3 Develop, implement, and review operational policies and guidelines for the Institute
1.4 Represent SAIMI and present in meetings, at events and conferences, and/or on Boards, committees etc.
Overall management of SAIMI operations
2.1. Operational planning and management of the resources (human, financial, physical, IT, etc) needed for SAIMI to operate effectively and deliver on its strategic goals.
2.2. Manage performance of staff responsible for office management and administration as well as identified programmes.
2.3. Ensure that Mandela University policies and procedures are adhered to in respect of staff appointments, procurement, contracting service providers, awarding and/or receipt of funding.
2.4. Ensure compliance with funders’ reporting requirements, project/s deliverables, partnership agreements.
2.5. Evaluate the efficiency of business procedures and overall performance according to organisational objectives and apply improvements.
2.6 Oversee financial processes and projects to promote financial sustainability.
2.7 Collaborate with Innovation Office to manage the IP and commercialization activities of SAIMI.
2.8 Oversee the development of funding proposals, conclusion and implementation of partnership agreements.
2.9 Lead budgeting and related reporting processes in line with funding requirements.
2.10 Contribute to the development of organizational reports.
- Risk and Compliance
3.1. Ensure SAIMI compliance with stakeholder contractual obligations.
3.2. Ensure adherence to SAIMI governance framework and policies.
3.3. Ensure that the Institute conforms to relevant regulations and policies.
3.4. Develop and provide the necessary support and resources to ensure the execution of the Risk Management Plan.
3.5. Track progress of the risk management efforts by reviewing the Risk Register and/or risk management reports.
3.6. Monitor and manage the compliance framework and associated risks.
3.7. Provide guidance on escalated risk events and assist with resolution.
3.8. Establish mitigation approaches for identified high severity risks.
- Stakeholder Engagement
4.1. Manage the development of any new or additional partnerships, alliances, and network with key stakeholders.
4.2. Support in developing and managing the stakeholder engagement plan.
4.3. Ensure that linkages and synergies with other SAIMI programmes and projects are explored for increased impact.
4.4. Contribute to strategic reviews and development of SAIMI’s programmes in general to ensure alignment

REQUIREMENTS
Postgraduate qualification in Commerce or Business Administration. Maritime related qualification and experience will be an advantage.
6 to 10 years extensive operations management experience including financial and budget responsibilities.
Experience in identifying and attracting funding opportunities.
Management of IP, including contract negotiation.
Understanding of the maritime and education sector, and its development agenda will be beneficial.

REQUIREMENTS
A Master’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related qualification
A minimum of 8-10 years of uninterrupted demonstrable experience in Digitalisation Services leadership, with at least 5 years in a senior management or executive role.
Proven track record in leading large-scale digital transformation initiatives, modernising digital services infrastructure, and implementing enterprise technology solutions that enhance operational efficiency and service delivery.
Extensive knowledge and experience in management of cybersecurity including designing and deploying cybersecurity-leading standards and frameworks.
Strong knowledge of governance standards and integrating ethical AI technologies to support institutional resilience.
